GMT20 cable

Does anyone know how I can take apart either the FM receiver end (the end that plugs into power) or the end that connects to the Nuvi cradle without destroying it?

I want to thread the cord through a small opening, but not keen on cutting the cord and splicing it. I tried to see if I can disassemble the receiver end without success. I did notice that the cradle side has two small phillips screws (but haven't tried to unscrew yet).

Yeah...

Let me know too. I want to drill a small hole in my dashboard and I'll need to take the cable apart also.

GMT 20 cable

Did you already disassemble the cable? I may have the same one. I'm not sure. The cable I have was included with the C550 I bought in July 07. It has a label "GTM 20". I didn't know it was a receiver until I saw this post. I haven't used it for anything. I always charge the GPSr in house. If it is the same cable I could try to disassemble the receiver part and let you know what I find.

Not yet

Yes, it's the same one. And No, I haven't taken it apart...yet. Didn't want to cause irreparable damage because of FM receiver capability.

I first tried to get the 12-v power receptable side apart without success. I have noticed that the side that connects to the cradle/unit has two small phillips...which I think is the best bet though.

I don't want you to disassemble and not be able to put it back together though...that thing goes for ~$214.

GTM cable

OUCH! Thats almost half what I paid for the entire GPSr. I don't have any use for the FM receiver. Nothing here in Savannah, GA. I think I'll give it a try. Nothing to lose.

Thanks for your sacrifice

I appreciate it.

As for the pricing, it's like anything else. It's always cheaper to buy anything as a kit than parts (including your car accesories/options).

GTM 20 cable

Well, I did take apart the cable as far as I could. Still has large molded cable on both ends. Put everything back together and plugged into car and GPSr. I think it still works, I get power and a green/orange light on large plug. I have no way of knowing about the traffic info. I have some photos of the cable if you are interested.

Have to cut and splice it...

Well, got a couple of pics from Ronnie and it doesn't look promising. Looks like I have to cut and splice them back together.

Based on the pic, I figured there'll be 8-9 wires and Ronnie said there are 10 and some with same colors. So anyone willing to do this, you should first mark the same colored ones before cutting. I recommend you dab nailpolish (no, not mine. My wife's) and then cut the spot so you know which one to splice them back together.

Another approach?

I've been trying to find an extension cable for the GTM20. I dont want to destroy the real cable in the event I have to return the whole unit.

Garmin has told me of people trying to put the cable behind the dash, and the FM traffic stops working. Turns out that they claim the wire itself is the antenna and when behind the dash, it prevents reception.

The connector that plugs into the mount looks a lot like a cell phone connector or SATA connector. Its not SATA. Does anyone know of a cell phone data cable that uses this same connector? Seems it would be safer and cheaper to hack on that then the GTM20 itself.

If we knew who made the connector and what it was called, we could find male and female versions and fabricate our own.

GTM 20 cable connector

I think those connectors are Hirose. Try their website, I think it is www.hirose-connectors.com.

Cut and Splice works fine...

Forgot to mention in this thread that I cut the cable (with 10 wires) and spliced them back. It works just fine including the FM Traffic reception. Interested in what I did that required me to cut the cable? Read this thread
