2008 Map Update failure on Garmin 2620 Unit

Whenever I try to transfer the maps to my unit I get an error message while sending map set "There was an error communicating with your device. Please make sure your device is plugged in and turned on. If error continue to occur, you may need to restart your device."
I could try to transfer 100 maps or just 1 map and it would fail to transfer. I reset my unit. I deleted all the data off it with the Page/menu/ turn on unit process to delete all data. nothing works.
The failure stops on windows XP and vista machines. Modifying the settings on the USB drives to turn off doesn't help (VISTA is default always on and my XP was always on.
At first after a few tries I was able to get 10 maps to transfer to my unit and I held tight for a few days since I couldn't wait 1 hour to talk to a Garmin rep. Then after speaking to a rep he said update my mapsource, which I did and that didn't help and now I have no maps and an expensive paperweight.
Has anyone had this problem before or a similar one?
2008 Map Update
I have both a 2720 and 2820. The 2720 required a program that came on the CD called MapUpdater. I was required to connect via USB and be connected to the Internet. Once the serial number was matched, I was prompted to enter the code on the green label on the CD case. It took about 10 minutes to complete the transfer of all maps. Mapsource wasn't used at all. The 2008 map update was good only for the one unit. I have to buy another CD to update the 2820.
2008 MAP UPDATE
I have a 2720 and had the same problem! I tried TWICE on my home PC and got basically the same message after about 45 minutes. Would have been nice to get this message right away, but no. One minute I at least had maps, and then (since it removes your existing detailed map) I had none. I had to take my unit to my office, newer and faster PC, 2.0 USB and newest XP. I plugged in the power cord, USB, started the DVD and followed the directions as they showed and it tranferred perfectly...took abot 50 minutes.

On the Garmin page that allows you to check for updates it asked me to put in my serial #. I did so and showed that the North america 2008 maps were avilable for my to have sent to me. They sent them out and I unlocked it.
That is correct. I have the
That is correct. I have the 2620 and the 2720 and was able to load the 2008 NT for the 2720, however, the 2620 does not take the 2008 NT, it still requires the vs 8.
This is not a NT disc

I do not have the NT disc. I have the City Navigator North america 2008. it is NOT NT. I'm on the phone with the software guy at garmin. He's so damn confused. We repeated each step 2 times now and he's speaking to his supervisor again.

I was on the phone with the Garmin guy for 2 hours. He was unable to find my problem. He said to try a computer with an "Intel chipset" because "Garmin perfers" users use that chipset. They dont state that on their website and I do not see how that would make it a problem since I tried to update the GSP on 3 different AMD computers. I'm gonna try an intel computer tomorrow and give my tech guy a call
