I don't think that POIs themselves will slow down your Nuvi. I would watch the free-space on the drive ... if it gets to full it may slow down, but this would probably be caused by having lots of MP3 and jpegs loaded as well. POI files are small ... with nothing else on the drive, you could probably load forever!

The only "speed" issue I have is..
The search time in the "Custom POIs" mode. The more I load, ( current count 68,715 on a nuvi 650 ) the longer it takes to display them.
The satellite lock times and map display refresh times are about the same.
