Hello...and a question (garmin lock stickers; cases)

Hello all,

Wow.........ya gotta love the internet huh? How did I ever survive without it? I think I am going to begin saying that about GPS as well....as I am a complete clod when it comes to direction. I am really horrible!!! So I am a newbie to the GPS world and recently purchased a Garmin Nuvi 660. I love it so far although I haven't had a chance to really put it to the test yet.......but will next weekend. I have already gotten a ton of info from you guys and really appreciate the help. Forums like this are the best way to gain info on anything I am finding smile.

Ok......so for my first question. I am a bit concerned about theft of my GPS. The way I am mounting it in my car, the cradle will be there all the time. I could take the cradle off the ball mount but the ball mount is permanent. I know my 660 can lock and I intend on locking it and setting a location for the lock. But I was wondering if I should put the stickers on my window. Has anybody done this? Do you think it would be effective or would I just be advertising that I have a Garmin and it could be in my car? I don't intend on leaving it in my car EVER.......but in the case I do I have a great hiding place for it. I am tinting my front windows too in order to make it more difficult for prying eyes. I love the 660 but I would be heartbroken if it got stolen.

Also, I was contemplating getting a camera case with a belt loop. Has anyone found one that would fit the 660?

Another thing........One thing I think we should do as GPS owners is if anyone ever asks how to unlock their unit (that they purchased) and it came locked.....encourage them to send it in to Garmin and they will simply unlock it and send it back. Tell them they don't even have to call them. Just put it in a box and send it off to them with a note and they will send it back unlocked, no questions asked. Perhaps more "hot" GPS's would be returned to their rightful owners this way wink.

Thanks so much.........sorry for rambling on my first post........just overwhelmed with questions and wonder since I so much as hit the power button on my GPS.

I have a 350. which is a bit smaller than the 660, but it fits perfectly into an old phone case. Every mall has hundreds of little stores that sell cell phone cases, and I'm sure you'll be able to find one that fits.

One caution: Most phone cases made today clip onto your belt. Years ago, they used to make phone cases that have, what is known in the trade, as BELT LOOPS. Evidently, cell phone prices have dropped so low, case makers figure it doesn't matter if you lose your cell phone when the belt clip slides off. I've lost my Treo twice before I just started putting it into my pocket. Bass Pro shops carry NiteIze phone cases that have a very good clip system, but I don't know if they have one that fits your GPS.

Wouldn't it be nice if an accessory manufacturer reading this came up with (all on his/her own) the idea to make GPS cases? If the case even had a way to allow the antenna to unfold, could rotate and had a clear face so the user wouldn't have to remove it from his/her belt, the GPS could be in a very convenient place for walking. I think if an accessory manufacturer were to come up with the idea (all on his/her own) to manufacturer such an accessory, he or she wouldn't be so foolish as to skimp on the attachment method, but would use something like real BELT LOOPS:-)

I agree....Or even just a

I agree....Or even just a nice hard cover case with a belt loop. It would just ensure that I never leave it in the car. It would be very convenient that's for sure.

I've added the request

I've added the request to the "what's your Nuvi missing" post. Maybe someone with manufacturing capabilities or someone who knows where to get one is looking.

Case

Wow, we (including myself) are going to have a bunch of geeks with belt cases for their GPSrs. How much can one fit on his/her belt anyways. lets see here, I have (when on vacation)

- Radar Detector
- GPS
- camera
- video camera

Humm...I think that I will stick with a Back pack when on vacation...lol

PS The c5xx series should have had a clip on the case rather then a stupid hole. I never mount my GPSr with the case still intact, does anyone do it?

Definitely interested in

Definitely interested in anyone that discovers a nice camera case for the 660.

BFK,
I am the same way as you. I cannot go anywhere without my IPod. *sigh* I am an electronics geek for sure.

2 Sidekick II family

Jon and I both have a sidekick II it allows us to respond quickly to emails when we are out and about. I love the freedom that it has given me, I can take the kids to the park and still keep my head in forum land.

Jon says that they are blackberries for teenagers. I just say when you feel young do as the youngins to;)

Belt Loop Dilema

squonk wrote:

About a week after this thread went dormant, I picked up 4 nylon cases (blue) with a velcro flap on top and... Get this... A REAL belt loop on the back (the kind you have to thread your belt through... Impossible to come off, short of breaking something).

The shape and size of these things are as if they were custom made to fit the Garmin 350 perfectly. One is already the defacto case for my unit. They came from a HAM's basement where they've been sitting for a decade or more. It took a while for me to get the funky smell out of them, but they seem to be non-offensive now... To my tastes, anyway.

So, here's my dilema...

There was a box full of these things, and I was told to take as many as I wanted. I took 4, thinking back to this thread and Squonk's request. They're smelling OK now, and I really don't need 3 extra GPS belt holders littering up the house, but I also don't want to spend my own money shipping them out to three lucky:) people who want one.

In the interest of full disclosure, I have to say, if you attach one of these things to your belt, there is no doubt... You're going to be labeled as a geek of the first order. If you also happen to have a cell phone attached to your belt, you'll have to sign a release, acknowledging you understand you're giving up all hope of ever forming a meaningful sexual relationship.... With anything.... Ever... If you also carry your PDA or MP3 player on your belt, well, my heart goes out to you.smile

Other than that, I have 3 blue nylon belt holders that are a perfect fit for the Garmin 350. There appears to be enough room in the velcro flap to hold something a bit larger than the 350, but I can't say for sure if anything other than the 350 will fit.

There's also a neat little pocket in the back large enough for extra SD cards, business cards or a folded up sheet of paper with your aunt Ethel's favorite bunt cake recipe.

The cases appear to be new, have been washed (to get the smell out) and are solidly stitched. Obviously, even though they appear to be new and working as designed, these would be shipped and accepted "as is".

If there are three people who think they can't live without one of these marvelous things, let me know, and we'll discuss some way of getting them to you.
