map routes

i have a c530 and it is set to navigate on the fastest route. when i drive local, it dosent take the route i would take. does anyone know how it determines the route? is it speed limit or us or state roads? is there a pattern?
Map Routes
I had a streetpilot III before I got the Nuvi 660. Fastest route leans toward highways & expressways. Shorter distance is more straight line. I find this works more like myself when getting in and around SF.
One of the features I miss from the Streetpilot was the ability to have it calculate a quick or a more thoughtful route as an option. The Nuvi leans very much on the quick.
