Garmin Dashboard Disc

I recall some discussion of Garmin Dashboard Disc years ago, but I have never had a need for it until now. Looking back at previous posts, one of the concerns was the adhesive coming loose and the GPS falling. For those here that use the Garmin Dashboard Disc, would you recommend it? There is a spot on my RV dash that might accommodate the disc.

I used a similar disk that I got on Amazon. Came with 2 disks - 95mm. I have Amazon Prime so shipping was free.

Be sure and clean the surface first. I applied the disk and let it sit for 24 hours.
It holds nice and strong. I heard that you can remove it by applying heat with a hair dryer and then gently prying it up with a plastic trim removal tool.

3 for $12 on eBay

3 pqck of disks 2.9 inches in diameter on eBay for $12 shipping included. They are descrobed as using 3M adhesive. See https://www.ebay.com/itm/177565198838

A larger version, 3.15 inches, is available as a 2-pack. https://www.ebay.com/itm/317519105835

The disk...

The disk adheres very well to a flat surface. My dash is nowhere near flat so I had to create a custom spacer using PC-7 epoxy paste (Home Depot) of the top area of the dash in spot that I needed to mount it. The bottom of the spacer conforms to the top of the dash. The disc is stuck to the top of the created spacer (which is flat).

It has held with no issue through SoCal heat for many years now using 3M heavy duty double-sided acrylic adhesive tape (Home Depot). The disk can be removed by slicing through the adhesive using a very thin wire or fine metal guitar string. Then the adhesive itself can be removed with the help of alcohol and firm rubbing with your thumb (or other similar non-marring tool).

I had more issues (especially during the summer) however with the suction cup releasing from the disc. It would come off frequently on it's own with temperature extremes (cold to hot, hot to cold). I think this had more to do with the disk being black as well as the suction cup being black as well (black absorbs a lot of heat and gets very hot sitting on the dash of the car). I tried dish soap and various other ways to make sure the cup stayed locked onto the disk. Dish soap worked the best (it helps to form a better seal...slides around initially but locks into place after a day or so) but also eventually failed...it lasted a lot longer than having the mating surfaces totally clean.

I finally ended up adhering the bottom of the suction cup to the top of the dash disk with the double sided adhesive as well, eliminating the loss of suction from the cup. I also used the same adhesive to lock the upper section of the suction cup to the bottom section of the GPS mount itself. It has not moved since and is rock stable rather than flopping a bit because of the flexible suction cup.

My solution...

I shaped a hockey puck to create a flat spot on my dash then used Gorilla® glue to mount the GPS bracket and the hockey puck. Previously removed the suction mechanism and created a flat spot on the bracket with hot glue. It's a "permanent" mount. wink

I don't understand

I don't understand why people aren't just using a good bean bag mount. My bean bag works great and doesn't slide around.

In addition, I can easily lift it off the dash and put on the floor out of sight, when I go into a restaurant, etc.

A permanent mount would seem to be a signal to a would be thief, that there might be a valuable dash cam or GPS, in the car.

Last but not least, when I sell the car, a potential purchaser might be turned off by the damaged dash.

In my case...

A bean bag would place the unit in my line of sight, tucked as it is next to the side window and on the edge of the the dash, it is easy to reach and does not interfere with my view out the front.

When/if I sell the vehicle I plan to leave it with my spare GPS. Removing my mount without damaging the dash is probably not an option, but I really don't care.

As to someone stealing it... don't see it as a really desirable item to steal, but the unit is easily released from the mount should I be parking in a risky area.

Custom Mount

Every vehicle I've ever owned had an irregularly shaped dash that gave me problems mounting GRPr's. Once in awhile, I was able to find an over the counter product that would work but most of the time, I would have to make my own custom mount.

I've had the best luck using these non slip sticky gel pads:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06ZXQSKN7?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_...

They aren't adhesive, don't mar the dash surface, don't slide around and lift off easily when required. I cut pieces to fit relatively flat areas of the dash and stick them to pieces of this plastic to make a flat surface for a suction cup or bolt down mount.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072J4J6MP/?coliid=I3P98RQ4UF2U1R&...

The plastic is easy to cut & shape as required by using a heat gun. Pieces can be fastened together with J B Weld and the all black components don't look unsightly on the dash.

Takes just a few minutes to put together and so far, the idea has worked well for all the vehicles I've owned.

I have used a bean bag mount in the past. The problem with them is that if you stop very abruptly or get in an accident the device being held along with the bean bag can become a dangerous projectile.

Just an FYI

I agree with you. In fact, that is exactly what I have done for years. However, in my case it is the WAF. WAF is the Wife Acceptance Factor. She doesn't want anything on the dash.

We do get by pretty well with the in-dash Sony and Android Auto. It does have its quirks, however. For example, once the turn signal is used, the screen immediately goes to camera display. While that does make sense, there are times where I need some fine navigation right when the screen is displaying camera images.

The other thing is occasionally the screen display goes do an unusable image. The fix is simple. Disconnect and reconnect the power cable. However. sometimes it is at a very critical time while navigating.

If I get a Garmin Dashboard Disc and mount one of my Garmins there, it will essentially be a back up. There are times when the Android Auto is navigating and we want to find a restaurant or gas station. Yes, Android Auto can do that, but I still prefer the way Garmin does it.

Yep

Can confirm. Yet, I'll still use one.
