Nuvi 765 (sticky plastic case)

My old Nuvi 765 gets seldom used anymore and most of the time it sits in a plastic carrying case. Today, I took it out to be used in my truck. I was suprised to find the casing of the Nuvi was tacky and very sticky to touch. I tried cleaning it with water and soap, Windex, rubbing alcohol but it made no difference.

What is happening to the casing? Am I doomed to a tacky Nuvi?

Various factors are the cause

Lots of fctors can be the cuase and you will find various remedies on line. One article that says plain baking soda is good can be found at https://heartworkorg.com/2017/01/08/sticky-plastic-and-how-t....

Sticky 7x5.

My nuvi 755 has the same problem. Will try the baking soda. Thanks for the tip.

Baking soda is temporary

The baking soda will temporarily mitigate the tackiness in the short term, but the underlying problem is still present: the soft touch plastic. I didn't look at the provided link, but my 1300LM and a 7" LCD TV I own suffered this. In short the plasticizers used in the creation process are causing the soft touch plastic to melt.

The only long-term solution that actually works is to remove the soft touch plastic, which can be done with 91% alcohol, paper towels, and a fair amount of elbow grease. Solutions like baking soda are only temporary in nature: the tacky / gooey feeling will return.

Getting Rid of the Soft Touch Finish

I second the alcohol cleaning method - it takes some time, but gets rid of the goo. DO NOT use nail polish remover or anything stronger as it will actually dissolve the case plastic & ruin your device.

Remote Controls

I go through the same thing with TV remote controls (and some eyeglass cases). Yes, 91% isopropyl alcohol using cotton squares or stronger and some force got it off for me.

Soft-touch plastics...

are now a sticky, gooey mess. A cordless drill, my nuvi 765 an old Motorola cell phone & numerous other electronics which had this "special" coating are now in the same situation.

My nuvi 765 had welded itself to the slip case it was stored in. I had to cut the casing away from the unit to free it from it's tomb. After that, I found the battery to be toast. It all went to e-waste.

Understandable

I can understand this. Spending an hour (at the most) to clean off the goo just so you could take apart the GPS to replace the battery on a long since discontinued unit just isn't worth it. I would have done it, but I'm also the type that likes to do stuff like this, just to see if I could.
