Auto Navigators - Been Awhile Since The Last Release

So I was thinking about how long it's been since Garmin released an update for their Drive Series. It used to be every year and now it appears to be several years between releases. With the use of Google Maps, Waze, etc. along with Car Play and Android Auto, it's no surprise as mentioned in this thread:

However, I will be going to CES in January and I'm quite chummy with one of the national sales manager who sometimes lets me in on non-announced upcoming plans for their product lines. I'm going to try and see if there is still a road ahead for the auto navigators or if they're going to pull that product line at some point.

I'll post it here of course but it won't be for a few months.

Auto Navigators - Been Awhile Since The Last Release

I would like to see multi-band in new Garmin navigators.

If I had my way, they would add the ability to use Android apps in addition to native Garmin mapping. I know it is unlikely to happen, but it would add value to the device to be able to add Androids apps.

Would Be The Other Way Around

I think we'd see a Garmin app on an Android device (like way back when) vs. them allowing Android apps on their device. I think for two reasons. One their current OS is not Android and two there might be license fees involved. Not sure but it would be nice vs. having to use a Garmin and your phone at the same time.

what is there to add

There are 4 navigators with multiple versions and in various sizes available. The nuvi Drivesmart 66 is the current personal one. I guess, if you have all the features you can use on a Nuvi, what need is there to make another one? The only thing I would add would be the mag mount as on my 3597. I love that. It is a PITA to disconnect/reconnect the power when removing/replacing.

Going To CES

Hoping to get some insight regarding any new auto navigators when I fly out to Las Vegas this week. Keyword is hoping. The guys I know at the booth sometimes are also in the dark regarding the companies direction with their products but not always. If I find out any news, I'll post it here next week when I get back.

It's just a matter of time...

...when new GPS units go the way of the dinosaur.

Nothing New

Used to be year after year with new releases but as anticipated, they're sticking with the same DSx6 series. They only pushed that radar unit for motorcycles and some new watches but nothing else. My buddy at the booth had no inside info either which he does sometimes. Proves Waze & Google Maps are king now but I still like an off network device for those times when there is no network.

When the old eyes can't read the fine print on a smartphone screen.
