An interesting article about coordinating time in London pre GPS. Other locations had superior methods of propagating a time reference. IIRC, from an Einstein biography, while working in the Swiss Patent Office Einstein evaluated a patent (patents?) for synchronizing clocks for the Swiss Railway System.
