Suddenly all 3 Garmin GPS's Update

I have 3 garmin gps's A 3597, 2797 and the newest Drivesmart 76. For at least a year maybe longer i tried to update the the 2 older 3597 & 2797 and got the excuse please install a memory card the one you are using does not work and it was new and supposed to work.Well this past weekend i tried again and wham bam all 3 updated to the latest maps. Even if the 3597 installed the lower 49 states no problem there. Can anybody explain this after trying many times.
