Why my Garmin Navi country list shows different names for the same country?

Dear all,

I'm new to this forum and Garmin in generel. I bought my first Garmin on Friday (so 2 days ago). I tried to test some addresses from different countries. What I found strange is that it shows different spellings/names for the same country.

So my questions to you experts are:

Could someone please tell me why there are several designations listed for some countries? And which one should I choose? Are there differences depending on the spelling? If so, which ones (for example different routings, map scope, etc.)?

I am from Europe and using the most recent Europe Maps NTU 2025.10.

I go to "Enter address", click on "Change country", write "Bel", for example, and the list is displayed:

1. Belgie 2. Belgien (which is the "correct" spelling in German) 3. Belgique

or 1. "Danmark" 2. "Dänemark" (which is the "correct" spelling in German)

or 1. "Finland" 2. "Finnland" (which is the "correct" spelling in German)

or 1. "France" 2. "Frankreich" (which is the "correct" spelling in German)

or 1. "Espainia" 2. "Espana" 3. "Espanya"

or ...

And my last question is: Is it possible to set-up my device to show only one country without their name-variants?

Have a nice sunday.

PS: Sorry for my bad English.

No

That is standard on the EU maps as they include different countries and numerous nationalities use them.

Hello sussamb, thank you

Hello sussamb,

thank you for your quick reply.

So you're saying that it doesn't have any impact on the routing (etc.) itself whether I choose one spelling/option over an other?

From my first example: "1. Belgie 2. Belgien (which is the "correct" spelling in German) 3. Belgique"

It wouldn't make a difference whether I go with the German "2. Belgien" rather than "1. Belgie" or "3. Belgique"?

In other words: It's just the "display name" in that list but in the background the map coverage and routing uses the same data for all spelling-variants?

I just wanted to be sure since I could not find anything in my quick search on the official Garmin website and forum.

Kind regards

It doesn't make a difference

Belgium for instance has what is termed "local short form" and that includes Belgique/Belgie/Belgien.

In similar manner, Denmark is called “Denmark” in English and “Danmark” in Danish because they are different but related languages.

No difference at all to the routing.

Thank you both for your

Thank you both for your answers. Now I can rest assured smile.

But it still bothers me a little bit that Garmin does not have any official statement regarding this (or I was not good enough in searching Sidenote: The link from "John from PA" is not the one I was looking for and also I have seen that before on my on research). It is somehow confusing for new users/customers like me (but might not to you experts grin).
Wish you all a nice week.
