Mesothelioma question

With so many mature males on this board I was wondering if anyone has/had been diagnosed with: "Epithelioid malignant mesothelioma"

Your experience?
Thx

I had a college (1965) classmate…

that had the condition and he lived to be 82, if fact he just recently passed away and the cause of death was advanced Parkinson’s. He spent a great deal of time in the 1960’s on Navy ships and in the Merchant Marine where he was exposed to asbestos. The mesothelioma never seemed to bother him much. He lived in northern Ohio and was treated at the Cleveland Clinic. The Cleveland Clinic info can be found at https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/22432-mesothe....

Thanks John

John from PA. I don't know if your post should make me feel good and look forward to another 35+ years or make me feel bad since I'll be 82 in December, LOL !

We have one of the best cancer hospitals where I live, the "Princess Margaret Cancer Hospital.

I'll have to see what the doctors will do next.

I’m 80 and wouldn’t want another 35 years

…and faced with prostate cancer (hopefully behind me), I think twice about buying green bananas!

Sorry

Sorry to hear that Melaqueman. I have not had it, but I worry about it, because I'm at enhanced risk for mesothelioma generally due to unusually high exposure to asbestos for a few years, almost 40 years ago.

Wishing you all the best.

About 40 years is it in my case. About 15 years ago a specialist doctor told me that my lungs were only working at 85% because of asbestos..

asbestos miasma

I don’t think that my geriatric memory is an issue here, but,,,

I was walking to work in midtown Manhattan in the mid ‘60s (the decade, not the streets) and clouds of white crap were raining down onto the street from a construction site. I picked some of the crap from the ground and it looked like asbestos. (I had taken a mineralogy class recently.) I got out my cigarette lighter (dumb kid that I was) and tested: it wouldn’t burn. Yup,,, an asbestos miasma in the air.

A few days later the news reported that asbestos was found to be a carcinogen. It wasn’t Nixon’s EPA which came later. It isn't clear what I read.

Asbestos exposure

While there is no safe level of exposure to asbestos, and you definitely want to avoid breathing loose particles of asbestos in if you can, most mesothelioma patients have had repeated, deep-inhalation exposures over an extended period, often job-related... asbestos miners and workers manufacturing products containing asbestos, insulation/HVAC workers, construction workers, floor installers, shipworkers, etc.

Most other people have had passing encounters breathing in asbestos (because it was used in so many products that are still around) and will not be any the worse for it. You can live or work daily in a home or office that has asbestos encapsulated (wrapped tight) or behind walls and be fine as long as no one is disturbing it, sending particles airborne.

renovating and asbestos

About 2 months ago a near-by King Soopers (subsidiary of Kroger) was renovating to make more room since they are now allowed to sell wine and discovered asbestos. The same for a near-by middle school. The grocery is located in a food desert and is a large issue. The school system actually had a spare school (boy, does that sound weird) about 15 minutes away (presumably by school bus) so it is merely profoundly annoying.

I know this is a bad time to say this but!

I have a book in my file box that is labeled "I'm dead now what!"
It has everything in it that my children will need when the time comes.
The reason I am mentioning this is for my page of people to notify I have POI-Factory and my login.

I thinks all us old geezers should be sure and include POI-Factory with information for people to notify just in case something happens to us.

A bad time to mention but it needs to be done as I feel like we are all family and would want to know about each other.
Mary

PS. Melaqueman, I hope you are feeling better and can do some enjoyable things outdoors. Mary

Good planning

I have a folder on my computer backed up in numerous places and a safe box that has all necessary paperwork for when the time comes. I am trying to make it easier on my family. It has passwords, will, contacts, obit, and so much more.
