Wait, what?!?... Boston's Sumner Tunnel

If you thought Philly's I-95 bridge collapse was bad (okay, they patched that one relatively quickly), check out this planned two-month shutdown of Boston's Sumner Tunnel, the main artery between downtown Boston and Logan Airport:

If you're thinking: shouldn't they have fixed all this in the Big Dig custerbleep era... so am I.

I live

in Phila metro, so I saw firsthand, the bad workarounds that were proposed when it happened (take Rt 1 to 76 to avoid the area). Since this would affect me, I left early for work and got there really early, because nobody did that--it made zero sense.

At least in Boston, unlike Philly, they offer helpful tips, such as,

"Travelers are urged not to drive to Logan Airport this someUH."

Interesting!

I remember driving through the Sumner and Callahan tunnels when I was stationed at Ft. Devens back in the late 60’s-early 70’s. The traffic was bad then, I can’t imagine how bad it would be now. If I remember correctly, the toll was .25 cents. I have on occasion taken a cab from Logan to the bus terminal in Boston. Those cab drivers would go through the toll booth and flip the quarter out the window. I don’t think they ever missed and this was while they were driving 15-20 mph.

I remember in the late 80's going to the combat zone which was next to Chinatown with buddies, drinking, and then taunting the working girls.

When I look back, I wonder why we behaved like that. Bothering people who are just trying to earn a living. What we do when we're teens.

Also remember buddies getting royally whooped fighting in Quincy market. Once I was taking action photos of donny brooks and now the combatants turned to me. Funny I wasn't afraid like I would be today.
