Garmin express does not show any map updates available only software updates

I have a lifetime map update subscription but Garmin express will not show any new maps available for my gps nuvi3580LM, it does show software updates but not maps.

What happen was years ago after the map update became too large to fit, I deleted voice, language, help files to make the newer map able to fit. I did back up some of the folders before I deleted files, I actually moved them from my garmin to my computer.

Unfortunately after doing this now the Garmin Express software does not show any available maps. I'm trying to fix this and did a file compare of the garmin and backup folder (I didn't do a complete backup, dumb!). Looking at what was different I copied over old files from the backup of the voice/help folders and then looked at the .system folder.

one thing confusing me is in my backup of .system is too big to fit on my GPS.
the largest files in the folder are gmapprom.img at 2.5GB and then D2248000B.img and D224800B.img both exactly 623.6MB, I'm not sure what these two smaller files are. Looking under mymaps on the nuvi it shows as "Cnna - Na - Dem North America DEM" and "CN North America NT 2016.20 3D"
Update: I also found these files in the Map folder, anyone with a 3580 could send me a directory file structure? I dont know why these are in two places, but i'm sure one of them can be deleted.

Is there anything I can do to reset the gps to factory, or get garmin express to see I need newer maps? the ones on there are very old 2016. Thanks!

sD card

Does your nuvi3580 have an SD card slot? If so, insert a 16MB to 32MB micro SD card. Then run Garmin Express again. It may find a map update.

From your description it may be that there is a failed map installation from limited internal memory. If so, with the SD card available, Garmin Express can figure it out.

No map updates

The SD card will probably work. I had a 550 and encountered the same type problem. After spending some research time and then time with Garmin they said the 550 couldn't hold the new maps as they were too big and I would need to upgrade to a newer GPS. Was not happy about that one!

MB or GB?

silly question but did you mean 16GB-32GB card or actually use a small card in MB in order to get the garmin express to show there is a map update? thanks!

Device manager

Try using JaVaWa's Device Manager program, it should help you understand what is where and allow you to sort out the mess your device seems to be in

Right!

32 max SD

Garmin can't handle larger than 32 GB cards (without jumping through a lot of hoops).

software update

Is the software update required to install maps after version *whatever*
the one, may be the cause of the other

Last time you updated?

If you haven't updated your maps in more than 2 years, that voids the "lifetime" maps updates. Garmin figures if you haven't updated the maps in more than 2 years (skipping numerous map updates) then that unit is likely no longer in use thus no more map updates.

Maybe not…

There is a great deal of evidence that Garmin has the policy about 2-years on expiration of lifetime maps, but rarely enforces it. But almost certainly you will have an issue without the use of the microSD card for memory expansion. This type of card is quite inexpensive; something around the 32GB max can be had at Best Buy for about $11. See https://www.bestbuy.com/site/sandisk-ultra-plus-32gb-microsd.... Something similar at Staples is about $12. See https://www.staples.com/lexar-professional-633x-micro-sdhc-3....

After removing unused files from my old 1490, I was unable to do map updates via GE. Reloading the files made no difference.

I called Garmin and was told I likely removed a hidden file which tells GE that the unit qualifies for free map updates. Garmin support for the unit had expired. They said the only option was to pay for the update. It wasn't worth it for the older unit.

I don't know if this applies to your 3580 or not though. This was quite a few years ago and may no longer apply to newer GPSr's.
