Digital Driver licenses?

Thoughts?

I see lots of things wrong with a digital license.

* App will have various permissions when installed. What's to say it won't be reporting other things back to the mothership

* How will officer read the digital DL? Will they scan something or need physical possession of the phone? If that latter, well there goes any privacy to any other content on the phone while it's in the leo's possession.

Another solution in search of a problem.

I use an app that provides

I use an app that provides Identity and proof of membership. It displays a QR code that either a scanner or another phone can read. It's a very simple thing and can be easily done.

Geez, it's getting to the

Geez, it's getting to the point that the darn phone has to be with us 24/7. What we really need is to be implanted with digital chips for everything.

There are times when I leave it at home all day.

Can't you see getting pulled over in an area with no cell phone coverage, you better have the old-school license in your wallet or car. Unless it's just a picture and requires no service. What a waste of technology.

Not less than 100 years ago

Not less than 100 years ago (~80yrs), they used to barcode people. I agree, with current tech, embedding rfid id's would be the equivalent.

How far we've come.

Yes indeed

1984 will be here soon..

I'm sure Soylent Green is being formulated as we breathe.

Most politicians are born & raised from a defective gene-pool. These people have no other job-related skills except to continue their destiny and pass more foolproof, i.e. nonsense, laws & regulations while telling the rest of the population this is for the greater good.

My lastest interaction with them was at the BMV when renewing my driver's license. You take OFF your glasses & take a vision test. Ok, so this tells them if I can legally see, or not, without glasses. But, they never test your eyesight WITH you actually wearing your glasses. And that's the kind of deep thinkers these people are.

What a joke. Until someone is killed by a legal driver who can't see past the steering wheel.

1. If this becomes reality
• get an old phone.
• Don't put a SIM card in it
• factory reset it
• Put the digital licance on it
• refuse to install any APP
• Keep the phone in a "Mission Darkness Dry Shield Faraday Phone Sleeve" turn the phone off.

Then when you have to surrender the phone with license, registration & insurance there's no geo data on it, an no service.

@Barney. As I understand

@Barney. As I understand it, driver license app (which one must pay for), will not work without an internet connection. Yes, I read that house bill in its entirety last night.

@Ken, here in PRIL, from what I recall, you must read a line of letters with your glasses on while staring into the machine. Similar to what an eye doctor uses. Then they do a flashing dot on either side to test your peripheral vision.

nope ...

I view a digital driver license the same was I view digital (LCD) license plates. There is absolutely NO WAY I would have either of those.

So if no internet connection (cell service) you are SOL.

BMV, nope, vision chart & peripheral all done WITHOUT glasses. Never once was I asked to put glasses back on. Just done in Feb. But of course it may have been the level of competence behind the counter that "forgot" what she was doing, or even why she was doing it.

There are digital chips for that already.

sounds like a major screwup waiting to happen

Most state governments can't manage even simple IT tasks without totally screwing them up.

Big Brother At It Again

Toll scanners, license plate readers, cell tower tracking, facial recognition, and now this too? I'm living in the wrong era. I'm sure as stated above there will be a lot of growing pains if they go this route.

digital currency

A digital id is going to be required for the new digital currency from the Fed. Digital currency, when implemented is a fully programmable and completely tracks all currency. Programmable allows the government to implement negative interests and just take your money. It allows "currency" to be expired, ie go to zero. It fully allows and is designed to implement all manner of rationing and limitations including the use of a social credit score. When these two things happen, welcome to enslavement and the permanent dystopia.

As long as people still have

As long as people still have an option not to the digital IDs, I think it's okay. And if digital ID's have no/less cost, even better.

Indeed. My auto insurance co keeps touting the spyware dongle to lower my rates. No thanks. Plenty of telemetry and spyware already built in to the car.

I wouldn't have one of those, either ...

Don't get me started on toll transponders !

imagine

going into a public bathroom taking a dump wiping your butt getting up and leaving the restroom getting a cell call from the tracker saying you didnt flush and you will now be fined $20 for not flushing. are we all willing to give up our privacy? how many freedoms do we have to give up before we realize thats not what i wanted tracking me 24/7!! i can see soon we won't be using cash anymore auto check out at some stores only take credit cards or debit cards things are changing a little slow right now but keep your eyes open

@Geo, I don't know about

@Geo,

I don't know about other areas, but the closest walmart in this ghetto (just outside of chicago), has eliminated all of their check out registers. Your only option is to use the self check out or request assistance at the self checkout.

My interaction with walmart is limited. Very limited, mainly buy something online a few times a year. Used to also buy motor oil from them, but the disparity between online prices and instore has pushed me to buying it online ($3 difference for the mobil 1 0w-30 I need). Might as well get it shipped.

At marianos, you need to add a digital coupon to your account to get the savings. https://www.marianos.com/savingsoverview/#coupons-info

In the old days one would just have their frequent shopper card scanned.

Cellular Coverage

This may not apply to a digital drivers license but all too many of these apps require cellular and or GPS coverage at least intermittently. For those who live in cities, or travel the interstates, all is good.

When you get into rural parts of the country that I often frequent, it's a different story. When I boot an app, I never know for sure if it's going to connect or not.

I find the coverage maps published by the cellular carriers to be a major joke. The local Verizon store for example, is solidly in a so called covered area but the employees have to go out in the parking lot, stand on the roof of their car and face Mecca to get a signal.

Until there is universal cellular coverage, many of these apps will only be marginally effective.

They'll probably force you to make an offline downloaded copy onto your phone for areas with no signal

Digital license

what happens when your battery dies and you can't access your phone.

It's coming! And you will lose all privacy and freedom.

Same as before

That would resemble the case when we leave our physical license at home.

I went to a concert rehearsal followed by a concert four years ago. Between the two I visited a local restaurant to get some supper. When I reached for my wallet to pay, I realized I did not have it. Nothing to pay with, no license to be legal to drive.

I called home and my wife confirmed that I'd just left the wallet home. The restaurant was able to bill my card using the info she provided on the phone, and I drove very carefully to get back to the concert and then home. That was about 30 miles of driving, so not nothing. But in thirty years in New Mexico I'd never been pulled over, and I hoped my luck would hold for the evening. It did.
