Apple iOS 16.xx surprise

Since upgrading my iphone to iOS 16.xx I was pleasantly surprised to find a full featured map available on my 2022 Palisade.
Without subscribing to a data plan.
Perhaps another nail in the coffin for Garmin. The CarPlay map found an address that Garmin did not. I can develop routes that are every bit as informative as Garmins.. actually a bit better in that they show traffic lights. The one thing it will not do is recalculate so if I deviated the car location indicator leaves the route which stays in its original position.
Cool
Are you talking about
Apple maps? I don't understand how you are getting maps on CarPlay without subscribing to a data plan. Please explain further.

Probably only the base map.
Probably only the base map.

I have no idea on how the magic occurs
But: I have a iPhone SE and NO data plan. I only need it as a phone and it interfaces well enough with the car via Carplay. Before the latest iOS update clicking on the Carplay map icon would load a map.. while I was connected to my home WiFi, but driving half a mile or so the map would progressively show less detail until eventually it would only show the car symbol on a greenish screen.
Since upgrading to iOS 16.xx now (from any place in Edmonton) when I click on the Carplay map icon I get a road map. Shows all the street names (depending on the zoom level) names the neighbourhoods, some apartment buildings, grocery stores, fast food drive throughs (McDonalds).
From the settings (available by clicking on the direction symbol) I have the option for a satellite view, that is not as detailed as the map I previously was able to get from my home WiFi but only gives me by color parks, green spaces, shopping malls.
I can search in any number of categories to develop routes/find places or using the keyboard an actual address. It stores for re-use previous routes.
I have yet to initiate it from outside of the city so am unsure as to how much "map" is actually available.
The only negatives, compared to my Garmin is that it will not recalculate, and when stopped at a light or in traffic the screen will rotate to the default position showing the map to the North.
What I have not played with.. The default map on my phone is Google maps and that is what I get on my Carplay. Would I still get something if I changed to another map on my phone?? I hate to loose what I have now by tinkering.....

That…
…is interesting!

My guess ...
is that you have some Google map segments cached in local storage in your iPhone. It would be interesting to see if you get new map segments when you take a long trip. If you have no data access on your iPhone, I think you will lose map coverage if you drive to a location that is not saved in local storage.
Disclaimer ... I know absolutely nothing about iPhones as my phone is Android.

You may be right about it being a local thing. If search for something.. only local hits show up. If I select an address a distance away I get a popup, "no internet"
Still what I have is useful, and new... with the latest iOS upgrade.

Yes, the map you’re seeing
Yes, the map you’re seeing is cached. When I’m in a no Internet area, and the map isn’t cached, nothing works. When that happens I use the free Maps.me app which allows you to download maps while you have Internet. The routing isn’t as good as Apple Maps, but better than nothing.
