Using Routes on Nuvi or Drivesmart devices

I was directed to this site by Garmin support, so if this is not the right place to ask, please forgive me.

I have used BaseCamp to import a GPX file and export the route to my Nuvi2597LMT. When I go t the Trip Planner app I can see the route points present there, but I cannot see any way to persuade the Nuvi to display the route and navigate along it.

Could someone please advise how (or if) this can be done.

Thanks

Tony

Well

I'm unclear what you mean as route points in Trip Planner. That app should show a list of any trips/routes you've sent to your device. Only when you select a trip to navigate will you see a list of points on that route, these will be the start and end points, and any viapoints that you added to the route. Note any shaping points aren't shown. You select the point at which you want to join the route, normally this would be the start point. Having done so you will be navigated first to the start point and then along your route from that point.

If you select any point other than your start point will be ignored. Your device will calculate a route to the point you've selected and it will then pick up the route from that point.

Maybe, I'm not sure, but

Maybe, I'm not sure, but when you first open Saved Trips, if it doesn't calculate the route, then you need to press the Green Arrow GO to make it calculate and show the route. Pressing Map will show the overview.

Let me explain a bit more.

I didn't realise at the time, but the GPX file I loaded into BaseCamp had 2400 entries.

I fed the mapping service 30 points, it calculated the optimum route between them and gave me the option of downloading a GPX file which I assumed had 30 points in it. I'm guessing that it added lots of intermediate points to force the points to be on the roads.

Anyway, what I see when I open trip planner is a series of entries
Route Point 1 to Route Point 2400 1
Route Point 1 to Route Point 2400 10
Route Point 1 to Route Point 2400 11
Route Point 1 to Route Point 2400 12
etc.

When I tap one of these lines, in this instance the one ending 11, I get a screen showing 31 route points (which I now know is the maximum) starting at Route Point 301 and ending at #331.

I appreciate that this isn't going to work as I hoped - 2400 points is ridiculous, but for my education, let's assume I want to follow the route from 301 - 331

There is a line between each point showing 0m, which looks like zero metres, but may be zero minutes, and I'm asked to set the departure time for the first point and the arrival time at the other points.

I have no idea when I'm actually going to start this trip, some time on April 23rd is the plan and I definitely don't know what time I will arrive at any intermediate point. I just simply want to have the trip available so that when I do set off, I can follow the route on the map.

If I ignore all the points and just click Go, I get an option to select which point I want to go to. The route just appears to be go to one point and I then have to select the next one once I'm there.

I'm probably being very dim, but I just can't see how to achieve what I want. Any help will be appreciated

Thanks

Well

I'd delete the lot and start again, having a route with that many points is going to cause issues.

Once you get a proper route loaded and get to the point of selecting go follow my instructions above. Your device will then navigate as planned without any further input from you.

Note there is no need to set times unless you wish to.

Agreed

I agree with sussamb above.

Garmin limits the number of waypoints in a trip planner route to 30

OK

That makes sense. I'll try to get the GPX file to just create the 30 points I need. Then I can load it and start afresh.

I can get the 30 points into a csv file, so I should be able to convert that to GPX. That should work.

Thanks again for all your help

Tony

Sometimes it helps to create

Sometimes it helps to create a new route over an existing gpx route. Then copy that into a new file to upload to the gps.

Hmmm ..

Not sure why you're fussing with a csv file? Just create the route in BaseCamp.

Best way is to add the start and finish point and let BaseCamp create a route. Drag and drop as necessary to make the route follow the one you already have. Note shaping points aren't included in the 30 route points so you can have 100s of those if necessary, although most routes won't need that many.

All this is explained in this tutorial, which may help you to understand how this all works. It's aimed at Zumo users but applies to other Garmin units too.

Why?

I am using a GSAK macro to caclculate the optimum route between a number of geocaches. Simply giving start and end points isn't possible because this is a round trip route and the start and end points are the same.

I've built a macro to convert the CSV file to a GPX route file and BaseCamp imports it happily now and has exported it to my Nuvi.

Thanks for all your help and advice. I'm now happy that this issue is solved. Do I need to do anything special to mark the thread solved or closed? I'm not familiar with the protocol here.
