Selectable voices?

My old Nuvi allows me to pick from a variety of voices. Do any of the current Garmin models have this feature? With my hearing impairment I find I can understand the British female voice best, and I'd prefer the same, or a similar voice when I buy my next gps.

I use a female British voice

On my DriveSmart 51LMT-S I use a female British voice because I like "slip roads". If you wish I can go out to the truck and provide "her name".

BTW my hearing problem (I have hearing aids trying to compensate my difficulty hearing thru noise and my loss of highs and one exceedingly deep null likely due to working in a factory pre OSHA) usually makes female voices more difficult. In this case it works satisfactorily.

Voices

Dsorgnzd, yes you can add more voices, although your old nuvi 200 may be limited in what's being offered. Most new US Garmins come with a couple/few voices but many more are available. To add them, you'd use Garmin Express. In Garmin Express in your device's tab, click on Tools & Content, then Utilities, then Optional Updates, then Language files, then English, then Install Now. Here's a FAQ on the offered voices for the various Garmin On The Road devices:

Good to know

Thanks

garmin real directions

For your next GPS, get a Garmin GPS that has Real Directions. That not only has the best (most advanced) TTS3 engine but it also gives directions at more points along the route. The Garmin Drive series has Real Directions.

There is a voice available for download by Garmin Express, British-English, Serena (TTS3)

Just ordered

I just ordered a Drive 52 (my needs are simple). Now I have to pick up a micro SD card for it. The only ones I have on hand are 1 gb (why bother) and 64 gb (I think that's overkill).

Good luck with the Drive 52!

From memory, I think 32 GB is the limit. Be sure to get either SanDisk or Kingston. The slowest SD card is fine. Can any other members comment?

4 to 32 GB

Anywhere from 4 to 32 GB will work in the Drive 52. But I disagree on having to get the Sandisk or Kingston, although both are reliable brands. Samsung or PNY are also reliable and at the moment Best Buy has a Samsung 32GB PRO Endurance MicroSDHC UHS-I Memory Card for $11. The PNY Elite at Best Buy is $7. More important, is to get from a reliable source and that rules out Amazon. The best place, and often readily available is Best Buy. Yes you may pay $2 more than what may appear to be the same thing on Amazon, but it is far less likely to be counterfeit.

As far as sizes, see https://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/drive52/EN-US/GUID-1...).

MicroCenter products

For μSD and other memories I've always been pleased with MicroCenter products. I don't know who really makes them. They sorta have a national presence. Sometimes they sell brand names cheaper than their own house brand too.

British female voice

I like the British female voice also. It is pleasant to listen to.

Karen

I would love to have Karen return to my GPS.

Do it, then

Sydric, if you follow the link in my earlier message, both your nuvi 3590 and DS 65 will have Karen available for use. I use her voice and have even changed my GPS voice wakeup to Hey Karen.

Please note that we're talking about this Karen

https://thegpsgirl.com/

not the personality type of person regretfully called a "Karen." wink

Thanks But...

CraigW:

I do have Karen on my 3590 but she will not speak on my DriveSmart. Maybe I'm doing something wrong with the DriveSmart? I loaded her and all of the relative files and I could never get it to work.

How did you install Karen?

If you copied the Karen file from an earlier Garmin Device with a different voice engine, it won't work. You should always install optional voices through Garmin Express so that the correct versions of the voices will be installed from the three voice engines Garmin has used in the past.

Don't copy voice files from one Garmin device to another. (It could work if the two devices use the same engine but if you don't know a file copied from one device to another device use the same engine, you'll have a non-functional voice.)

I prefer the British male

Might Work

CraigW:

I just checked my DriveSmart. Switched from Serena to Karen and I think it might be working now. The files were already on the GPS and I don't remember how I installed Karen in the first place. I'll try it out on our next road trip soon. Serena won't be happy if it works but I much prefer Karen.

Thanks for your help.

I keep Australian Karen in

I keep Australian Karen in queue always. Karen is lovely to look at as well as to listen to.

One last gripe.

My new Drive 52, even the British voice, tells me to turn "in a quarter of a mile" instead of "in point two miles". Since the distances shown on the display are in decimal miles, like the odometer on my car, I would much rather have the spoken directions use decimal miles. Our old Nuvi 40 does.
