Garmin Nuvi 2589 LMT - Can't load maps

RESOLVED: BAD (NEW) SD CARD!

I updated my maps a few months back and Voice Command > Find Address stopped working.
Error says "This feature is not available for American English"

Since then, I can't get any maps to load except for CN North American NT 2022.20 Foursquare, which doesn't do me any good.
I have tried Change Map, Reinstall Map, changing cables, installing an SD card.

Garmin Express says that the map loaded on the device is City Navigator US & Canada 2022.25. Software version 8.80.
Unit itself says CN North American NT 2022.20 Foursquare.

When I spoke to Garmin, they said the device itself is the problem.

Sigh.

Thank you in advance for your help.

How are you doing the update

Garmin Express, or something different?

Yes, Garmin Express

Yes, Garmin Express

Really?

In what way did Garmin say the device was the problem? What was their solution?

I'm suspicious of the SD card

If you review https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=cFc1ueuoRf7ofHjYbWfu9A you will see that statement "Voice Command will only function when full coverage of a device's preloaded map is installed."

Can you remove the SD card from the Garmin and check it through a PC or Mac and see what if anything is on the card? Also check it to see how it is formatted (FAT, FAT32, etc.). Don't reformat it just check it. A 2 GB or less card, which is likely too small for a 2589 LMT, can be formatted in FAT or FAT32. Cards larger than 2 GB should be formatted in FAT32. I've just checked the card in my 2689 and a small amount of Garmin related content is on the card, placed there during some former map update by GE.

Check your PC, specifically the path at C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Downloads\Map.
Let us know what folders are present. Each folder represents a previous map and moving forward it might be best to be sure the SD card is OK, then roll back the map to some previous version, retest the 2589, and then do an update to the latest..

I'm on a Mac. The only map in my Garmin > Map is City_Navigator_North_America_NT_2022_25.gmap

The SD card has this on it:
City Navigator North America NT 2022.25.img
BCA06B57-B8BA-4052-B7AB-930E9BAD4B71.gma

as well as gmapprom.gma, gmapprom.img, gmapprom.unl, gmappupdate.gsd

The SD card was formatted FAT:
MS-DOS (FAT) in FAT32 clusters

I just tried reformating the SD card and reinstalling the map, still getting only the Foursquare map.

They told me to reinstall

They told me to reinstall it, says it might be the device, but they no longer service this device.

my SD only has the gma...

my SD only has the gma... files. Try MOVING the other 2 to your computer (to save). Then run GE and see if it wants to update those files.

Well

More importantly what is showing in .system?

Either way I'd delete the file in your map folder, reformat the card FAT32, not FAT, and then run Express again, only adding the card to your device when prompted.

If that doesn't work the next step would be to try the cloning method.

View hidden foldes/files on a MAC

“Sussamb” has a point about what is in the .system folder. Not sure on a MAC, but in Windows some folders/files aren’t visible unless a setting is changed. To make sure you are seeing everything on your MAC see https://nordlocker.com/blog/how-to-show-hidden-files-mac/

For Mac

For Mac, Shift+Comd+period toggles Hidden Files.
