Nuvi 3597 software update: Navigon V2.10

After updating Garmin Express to V 7.10.0.0, I am getting a strange software update notice on just one of my two nuvi 3597's. When I click the "View Details" button, the software is identified as Navigon Version 2.10, Initial Release, File size 1.27 MB, Install time 1 min.

Anyone know what this software update is? Or why it is offered on one of my 3597's but not the other one?

Very odd

Is it just adding the yellow arrow "vehicle?"

For what it's worth, I see it mentioned back in 2012!

I'll check mine and report back.

And I'm back. I also have two nuvi 3597s. Neither was offered any update on Garmin Express. Garmin's old WebUpdater software also reported no update. What are the file-dates of your two Navigon.srf files?

I did check the vehicles available on each 3597 and saw a yellow arrow vehicle. On the chance that your update was adding a yellow arrow vehicle, maybe one of your 3597s already had it as mine do.

Aha, I bet that's it. I looked at the vehicle files on one 3597 and see Navigon.srf file-dated 6/7/2012 and with a size of 1235KB. My other stock vehicles have file-dates of 2008.

3597 Navigon update.

Thanks CraigW ... when I get a chance to bring my 3597's into the house I will check for that and let you know.

Well ...

CraigW and John From PA are both correct in indentifying the update being offered, but that's not the end of the story. If you aren't a "Garmin geek" don't read the rest of this post because it will be boring.

I use the standard Garmin blue arrow (file triangle_blue.srf) on all my Garmin's and have eliminated most of the other .srf files that came on the device to save space. But I have left 3 or 4 vehicle files on each of my devices. I have two nuvi 3597's. My first one was an official Garmin certified refurbished unit and it is NOT THE ONE BEING OFFERED THE UPDATE. It has 4 vehicle files: car_blue.srf, euro_blue.srf, navigon.srf, and triangle_blue.srf. None of these files show file dates in Windows Explorer, so that tells me that they are the original files that came on the refurbished device.

My second 3597 is a used one I bought on eBay several years ago, so I have no idea about its history. It also had 4 vehicle files. But it did not have navigon.srf and instead had one called truck_blue.srf. The other three were the same as my first 3597. But unlike my first 3597, all of these files showed various file dates which tells me they had been updated, installed or otherwise copied into the unit and were not the original files shipped on the device.

OK, so I thought ... for some reason Garmin Express wants that "navigon.srf" file on this second 3597 so I will just let it install. So I let Garmin Express do its thing, rebooted the nuvi and checked to see what it did. Well it did not put a navigon.srf file on the device, but instead replaced my triangle_blue.srf file with a new file with today's date named triangle_blue_210.srf. What the hell? So I booted up the 3597, looked at the navigation screen and sure enough, my blue triangle was gone and there was an ugly yellow 2D triangle as my default. The normal Garmin 3D blue triangle was no longer available to select.

I have no explanation for why Garmin Express pulled this shenanigan, but to resolve it, I deleted all the dated .srf files from my second 3597 (the used one from eBay) and copied the undated original files over from my first 3597 (the official Garmin refurb). So far it seems to now be "normal", but it will be interesting to see whether Garmin Express tries to change it again. Go figure!

I know this whole thing makes no sense ... but I swear it is what happened.

Same experience

I just went to update maps to 2023.10 and got the same update to Navigon v2.10. One of 3597 was offered the update but not the other. Similar history as alandb units one was a new purchase at the Garmin store in Chicago when the 3597 was just released and the other an ebay NOS from a marine store closeout.
Didn't want to foul up my 3597s as I'm heading out for on a trip in a couple days, so I came to my most trusted Garmin site for a search on what might be going on.
Sure enough you all had a thread going.
Thanks to all.
