Do Older Garmins Take Longer To Update?

I am updating my Garmins tonight from 2022.10 to 2022.20.

It seems like it takes longer to update the older Garmins than it does the newer Garmin.

Has anybody else every noticed this or do I just happen to have some sort of odd situation causing them to take longer to update?

My oldest/slowest are Garmin Nuvi 350/360.

One of my newest is a Garmin DriveSmart 65 with Amazon Alexa.

USB 1.0

is part of the slowness problem on old nuvi's. Plus they have notoriously slow processors.

USB 1.0 And Slow Processors

Thank you for the reply. I will have to do some more research to find out which ones have faster processors and the ability to update faster.

My slow nuvi 750

The copying of the new map to my old nuvi 750 is something that surprises me each time a map update comes along as I again realize how slow the process is. rolleyes

serial connection and perhaps write speed

even my much loved and not particularly "older" 3597 takes longer to write the maps from my PC to the unit then do the most modern ones. I think the primary bottlenecks are the particular serial connection implementation and possibly the write speed of the non-volatile memory. I rather doubt the processor speed is a limitation.

Talking about speed..

Why is the time remaining not even close to the actual time it takes? Seems Garmin needs to fix or just remove that time estimate thing altogether and just go with a % done.

I think that was one of the fixes listed in the GE Release Notes for 7.7.0.

Do Older Garmins Take Longer To Update?

A couple of mine have wifi. That seems to be quite a bit faster than using a wired connection.

Updating

In my opinion all those people who claim they can update their GPS in 15 minutes or some other ridiculous number are either doing one of the following things:

1.) Use an extremely high speed server at work
2.) Only download a particular region
3.) Only update the device.
4.) Pay a very high monthly price for a very fast ISP!
5.) Nr 4 is out of ordinary mortals price range

So again in my opinion whatever you read about others doing faster downloads, take it with a grain of salt!Yes older Garmins have slower processors, USB ports etc compared to newer ones..
