Just picked up a Drivesmart 55. Comparing it to my Nuvi 3597

Hey all!

I just picked up a Drivesmart 55. I have been using a Nuvi 3597 LMT for several years now. I made the purchase thinking something 5 years newer would be 'better'.

To be honest, the Drivesmart 55 feels cheap compared to the 3597.

Has anyone gone from a 3597 to a Drivesmart 55? What are your experiences / preferences?

I may end up returning my 55. We'll see.

Drivesmart vs nuvi 3597.

In my opinion, the 3597 is hard to beat. I have two 3597's, a DriveLuxe 50 and a DriveLuxe 51. The DriveLuxe models are newer but very similar to the 3597. The 3597 is still my favorite.

sorry to hear

I was hoping that there would be a feasible alternative to choose when I need to replace my 3597 when the time came.

I tried the Drviesmart 61.

I tried the Drviesmart 61. Didn't like it. So I got the Drivesmart 55 and I think it's a very good replacement for the 3597.

I'm disappointed as well

I have a 2689 and looking at the specs for the new ones don't see much advantage to upgrading either. The HD screen is about the only thing.. but I don't know it that is worth upgrading for.

I wish.. they made a model that, with a choice of a subscription, would connect like a phone and give you more local detail. A dedicated smart phone if you will. And because of its limitations would have a very reasonable monthly charge.

Upgraded

I upgraded from a 1390T to the Drivesmart 55. Huge performance difference. I’m pretty happy with it, only thing I don’t like is the battery life. There was a glitch in the firmware it it looks like they fixed it in one of the updates.

Battery life

My ancient Nuvi 850 had good battery life, you could also swap the battery out in 1 minute!

As for the DS55 the battery life is advertised as 1 hour, as most automotive GPS's are now, I believe.
They are designed to be used and plugged into a 12 volt outlet.

That is what my DriveLuxe has been doing. I sent it in once, but I may have to send this one in, too.

3597 Vs Drivesmart

I bought a Driveluxe 51 and a Drivesmart 65 for two of my vehicles to get compatibility with the BC-30 backup cams. The plastic case of the Drivesmart makes it feel a bit "cheap" compared to the sturdy aluminum cases of the 3597 and Driveluxe 51. The Drivesmart 65 also lacks the powered magnetic mount of the 3597 & Driveluxe 51. It also lacks the green topographic map shading I've come to enjoy on the 3597.

I'm still evaluating the Garmin Drive app on the Drivesmart 65 to see if it provides more / better information than the Smartphone Link app on the 3597 & Driveluxe 51.

Right now, The 3597 is still my favorite and I wouldn't consider a replacement at all if it had backup cam compatibility.

Spoke too soon...

No, I spoke too soon! This firmware issue is not fixed. See this thread.

nüvi 3597 is a gem

I think Garmin did nearly everything right when they made the 3597. I hope mine will have a long life as I've not seen one that compares since. Some come close, but they appear go have given up on the magnetic mount with its bigger amplified speaker. Its glass and metal construction feels like quality and the components inside seem to be just as good.

If I had to replace my 3597 and couldn't source another, new or refurbished, I would consider a DS55 or maybe a Garmin RV 780/785. But any of these feel like the quality is not that same as the 3597.

My wife and I are happy operators of two 3597 units. The only reason that I got them was reading about them on this website. I am grateful.

2699

Have a 2699 and at some point, will want to get a new one. I imagine that we are basically at the end of development for standalone GPS devices, much like happened to calculators a long time ago. Just hope they continue to sell new ones even though there is no new development happening.
