RV 780 Lockup on Custom POI

Just got a new RV780 and have 64gb Sandisk Extreme Sd card with the Custom POI loaded on it. When I turn on the RV780, and get the prompt to copy the custom POI file to the GPS, I can click on No and everything is fine. If I check the box to don't ask again, then click No, the GPS stops responding and leaves that screen showing. I can hold the power button down and the GPS will shut off, so able to repeat this several times.

I also tried as 32gb SD and the same thing happens.

Any guesses why?

First, the 32 GB card is the max size the RV 780 can handle. So don't use the 64GB card.

Second, how many entries are in the POI file?

Methinks there is something wrong with the POI file. Corrupt or two many entries. Tcreek should remove the file from the card. Create a POI with a single entry. Use the POI Loader to load that file to the SD card, (32gb) then repeat the steps he's using to recreate the problem.

If that works, then you need to check the POI file for number of entries.

Also happens to me

This exact same thing happens on my new Drivesmart 55. The GPS locks up when I put a checkmark on "don't ask again" every single time. I tried all kinds of microSD cards from 2GB to 32GB and the same thing happens every time. Even tried loading POI's from computer to microSD and loading directly to the device and no go. I have to hold the power button for about 12 sec to get it to reboot. I tried everything and finally gave up. I sent the issue to Garmin support via their website last week and haven't heard a thing back from them.

It's not the POI file

I tried different POI's, a single POI, multiple POI's, loading it different ways and everything else I could think of and it does the same thing on my Drivesmart 55. Doing the exact same thing and testing it on my 2495LMT and it works perfectly fine.

Sounds like a software bug to me.

The other suggestions that have been given are good ones and definitely worth a try. But to me this sounds like a Garmin software error, so it may be worth reporting it to Garmin.

That said, I am not sure why you would put POI files on a SD card in the first place. My suggestion would be to just install them directly in internal memory. The .GPI file generated is usually not large enough to cause any free space issues in internal memory.

Maybe because I'm too lazy to walk to the car, get the unit, walk back in and load the POIs. I put them on the SD card and load them next time I go to the car.

Only problem is, I forget to bring the card in, sometimes, and have to make that trip in and out anyway! smile

I already reported it to Garmin. I'll see if anyone replies or if they post a firmware update.

Makes sense.

Ah OK! That makes sense.

Ok, I can reproduce this on

Ok, I can reproduce this on my
Garmin DriveSmart™ 55 & Traffic (55 MT). You did report it, so, email reports take a while to get a response. For more immediate reports, call them between 9 AM and 5 PM Mountain time and you will get a much faster response.

As you said, No works fine, as does Yes. It's only the Don't Ask button that causes the problem

Tried a 32 gig and it has same problem.

I use the same POI file set for each of the RV 660, RV770 and RV780, and only the 780 has problem when the Don't ask again box is checked.

Have had a GPS get caught in a constant reboot mode after loading Custom POI directly on the GPS. So I use the SD card as it can be removed if the file is damaged.

Yep, I misread that support document the first time, and it is the RV785 that can use the 64Gb sd card. Have tried it with a 32Gb card.

Have 4 GPS (RV 660, RV770 (2) and the RV780). The card/file works okay in all but the RV780, so sure the problem is just with it, and not the file.

I emailed a problem report to Garmin. Will wait the 5 to 10 business days for their answer.

RV 780 Lockup on Custom POI

Got an email back from Garmin Support. They didn't address the problem with the software being broke.

"The RV 780 runs on different technology than the previous RV models. Once you import the Custom POI files from the card, they are on the internal storage of the device itself. There is no longer a need at that point for the card to remain in the device. You will be able to access the content with the card removed.

The card is simply used for transferring the files from your computer to the device itself. The files remain on the card, but the GPS no longer uses them. Leaving the card in will cause the GPS to try to load those files every time it powers on.

Removing the card will resolve the issue. You will only put the card in the device if you are:
• Loading new POI files for the first time
• Utilizing maps of other countries
• If the device runs out of internal storage in the future for maps
If none of the above are the case, you would remove the card to prevent any issues. It is important to keep in mind this is new technology, so it will function differently than an older product you have. "

lIMHO, that was a pretty

lIMHO, that was a pretty poor response.

No, they acknowledged the bug

Garmin recognized the bug when they gave you a work around without specifically stating so. Having worked in software support many years ago their response follows the same format we used.

Stupid answer

It works fine in every other Garmin GPS that I’ve ever owned. If they wanted us to load POI’s to internal memory, why are they giving us the option to load it or not on the pop up screen and a checkmark for whether we want to see the pop up again. Funny that they didn’t reply to me, I contacted them 10 days ago.

RV 780 Lockup on Custom POI - Fixed

It only took them 6 months, but they did finally fix the lockup problem with not copying the POI file from the SD card to the device. That was after they said it wasn't a problem with the software.

Update?

Was there a software update that fixed it? Was it offered through Garmin Express or a wifi update? Just curious.
