Corrupt Garmin map download?

Software version: 5.40
Map: Full Coverage of Europe 2020.10

On July 21, I update the map. After restarting the GPS, I found I was unable to input addresses for France (I live in Germany). On inputing an address, when I slect "change country" and type F, the conly country that comes up is Finnland. When I try to input the coordinates for a location in France, calculation hangs at 79%. I have reloaded the map 4 times already; no change.

Check isn MyMaps and make sure the European map is checked and not just the Global Map.

And...

...and also check that the map checked in myMaps is all of Europe. It sounds a lot like what happens in North America when the GPS has too little room for all of NA and instead installs something like the Lower 49 states which makes searching for a Canadian address more than problematic.

This could especially be likely if your nuvi 2798 came with a full map of North America and you tried to add all of Europe as well. The 2798's 8GB of storage may not be enough.

What happens if you try to find an address in Spain/Italy/Greece for instance? Maybe you have just northern Europe.

How much free space does your nuvi have now?

Have you inserted an empty SD card in the nuvi before trying one of your installation attempts? Were there any popup warnings about space, areas to select, or need for an SD card?

If all else fails...

You may want to do a hard reset. Back up your poi's if not on an SD card.

Well

The EU map is now so large it's split into two, North and South, so I suspect only one loaded, you can check by looking in myMaps. Run Express again and install the full mapset.

If you already have both check both are selected.

Is the OP a Mac user?

Schnorkel, did you update with a Mac computer? If so, the problem may have been with the previous Garmin Express. The new v6.17.0 shows these update notes for Mac computers:

For our Fitness devices, if Express downloads a software update to the device during a sync, the user will get a notification that an update was downloaded and needs to be installed. Previously, the software update would get downloaded, but until it was physically installed, certain features of Express would not work with the device, such as installing CIQ Apps.

If a map update included multiple map images, Express would only install one of the images, rather than both. Both maps are now being installed correctly.

We’ve added a hyperlink to the Safety Camera Purchase page. This link will direct the user to a FAQ that displays the coverage area for each region.

Helped alleviate a server error when attempting to purchase a Europe Lifetime Map Update.

Other minor bug fixes and improvements.

Thanks for your suggestions

In fact, Garmin appears to hav edividedthe Europ map in two. My Nüvi shows CN Europe NTU 2020.10 ALL NORTH as the installed map, but there is no sign of the All South map to check on. I have done a hard restart but no change. I have done yet another reinstall of the Full Coverage of Europe 2020.10 map, again, no change.
Any other ideas?

Also, I have done the updates on a Windows 10 machine, not a Mac

I suggest a phone call to Garmin Customer Support

Schnorkel, I think the next step is to call Garmin and report your multiple installations of the current map failing to install half of Europe using a Windows PC and Garmin Express and see what they have to say.

Update Express?

Did you, as suggested above, install the latest Express which seems to have corrected what you're experiencing?

A question

I thought about suggesting the same, but then thought that whenever starting an older version of Garmin Express that it forces a GE update before allowing GE to update a map or GPS software.

Is it possible to use an older GE to update maps or software and avoid updating GE?

Just curious since it's never been an issue for me. confused

Well ...

It'll only force it if there is a critical update

Thanks, good to know. (I knew you'd know.) wink

Probably a silly question, but ...

Do you have a micro SD card installed in your nuvi. You probably need that to have sufficient space to hold both parts of the Europe map.

@ Schnorkel

Do you have the maps downloaded to your computer? If yes, when you run BaseCamp or MapSource without the gps connected to the computer. Do you get the same search results? The ones you couldn't find just with the GPS search.Just curious if your maps on the computer, matches the ones on the GPS? Couple of members have asked if You have a SD card installed. If you have full map set when you download to the computer and not on the GPS. The SD card may be a good place to start.

SD card?

You are right Charlie … I had missed that CraigW had mentioned the SD card in an earlier post. I don't think Schnorkel has answered that question yet though.

As another has said, make sure your SD card is good and has sufficient space.

True

Express though should prompt for the card or say there isn't sufficient space if a card is required.
