After today’s map update I’m down to 488MB free
On one 2689LMT, and 412MB on second one.
Way back when on my 660, I went through removing unneeded files and that allowed for a few more map updates before switching over to external memory card.
I see I’m about to need to do this again.
Anyone know what can and cannot be safely removed on a 2689LMT??
I vaguely remember that there were many help, voice music, and a few picture files that were removed on 660..
Can't you install an SD card in each one? That would be easier than searching out and deleting files.
You are doing better on your 2589's than I am doing on the 3597's. One of my 3597's still shows 40 MB free after the map install, the second one is down to 14 MB.
Before anyone asks, I have micro SD cards in both of them … Garmin Express hasn't used them yet.
I'd also just add the SD card and never worry again.
But for those wanting to avoid or delay the SD card option for extra memory, follow the FAQ to start with:
Note that the FAQ is a bit dated and newer devices can likely remove more files.
I remember that link as I used it with my 660.
That’s why I posted.... I figured there might be a different file set that could be deleted on a more recent model than the 2015 link would know about.
I’ve got 16GB cards for both 2689LMT units, I’m just delaying using them!
Don’t know if it matters on new units... on the 660 I believe that running map off SD card was a bit slower than off internal storage. This can still be tested as I have a map still on internal, yet presently run off SD via the “supp” file names.. I do see a difference between a class 2 or 4 and 10 card. But only a slight difference between class 6 and 10 card, on the 660..
Do you think you can actually tell the difference in a microsecond response on one SD card or vs another?
The class is the write speed, not the read speed
I saw a difference in slow to fast on 660
As long as I was class6 or higher, no difference..
Now it could be that the class 2 card was degraded. ?
At the time, On 660 I believe I did cycle back and forth between 2 & 10 cards for map upgrade. 2 was slower than 10. 2689 both have class 10 card in them, but nothing running on them so I’ve nothing to compare speeds on.
That 2 did eventually die. Now I alternate between 6 & 10.
sussamb, kinda my point. Are we nowadays in such a hurry that a few milliseconds will change someone's life, it's not a matter of hours or days!
I guess it's that instant gratification these days.
I'm with you there
I’d try a 2 again if I had one, but my slowest card now is a 6 and I didn’t see any issue with that. I’ve just 6 and 10’s now.
I just bought 2 Kingston 32GB Canvas Select UHS1 Class 10 80MB/s microSD cards yesterday for $4.99 each.
