My Nuvi 3790 will use the computer for power when connected by USB but I can not get it to show up as a drive so I can update the maps. Using a 2015 iMac and MacBook Air. Also have newest Garmin Express which can't see the Nuvi.
First, connect the 3790 directly to the computer; i.e., do not connect the cable to the 3970's powered mount. You may already be doing this.
Second, try switching your 3790 from MTP mode to MS mode. This is needed to see the 3790 as a drive and may also let Garmin Express see it:
Some last bonus thoughts. I have two front USB ports on my PC and I find that one port tends to only see my 3597 as wanting power while the other lets the computer and Garmin Express see it. If you have other USB ports on your iMac, try it/them, and do connect the cable directly to the iMac and not to an external USB device. If your 3790, iMac and Garmin Express worked well in the past but now doesn't connect, I suspect the cable or either the iMac or nuvi port as bad. If you have another cable, try it.
Per owners manual. "This USB mass storage device is compatible with Windows® XP or newer and Mac® OS X 10.4 or later".It should go right into mass storage mode.If you have multiple drives on your mac, you may need to look at how to map the drives.Info should be available in your help files. Not a mac user but found this info http://osxdaily.com/2010/09/20/map-a-network-drive-on-a-mac/

It may works for you.
the cable you are using. Is it a very skinny USB cable? That won't work. The one came with a Garmin is thicker than some aftermarket cables. Also try another USB port on the computer.
Sometimes just restarting my computer solves problems I am having.
Connect directly to the computer using the factory provided USB cable. Don't connect via a USB hub.
After reading some of the suggestions from this forum on my topic, I connected my Nuvi 245 to the computer and launched Garmin Express.
Garmin Express recognized the GPS and I then upgraded the software.
The GPS now shows up in Basecamp and my computer file explorer.
Some USB cables are strictly a power cable. You need one that can also transfer data. I just purchased one on Amazon for my 3490.
