DriveSmart 61 Planned trip Problem

Hi,

Have just made a new trip in new trip planner.
Was HOME---> Waypoint--->AN ADDRESS 100 MILE Away--->Waypoint--->HOME.

Is it not possible to do a "Round Trip" as I was heading back HOME from my address 100 mile away, it told me to do a 'U" turn and head back. Even 3 mile from home it kept telling me to head back to the 100 MILE Address.

Can someone tell me if you maybe have to plan a single trip there and a separate single trip back home?

Thanks

Well ...

You can certainly plan a route like that but you have to actually hit every point unless you've converted them to shaping points. Sounds to me like your GPS never got to one of your points so it's doing what it should do and directing you back to it.

The trip plan

May have incorrectly called them waypoints. Here is the plan in order of the trip plan.

1) MY HOME ADDRESS (from my home)
2) POUND ST & EAST ST
3) 39 BEACH ST (my ultimate destination 100 mile away)
4) HWY 7 & HWY 70 (returning to my home)
5) JOE SMITH ST (returning to my home)
6) MY HOME ADDRESS

Once I arrive at destination, do I have to confirm I am there?
I just turned unit off and back on to do the return home, so maybe made the mistake there?

Thanks

Well ...

There is no need to confirm you're there IF you actually hit 39 Beach Street and your GPS registered that you'd done so and started directing you to HWY 7 & 70. Personally on a route like that if I'd stopped and then restarted I'd have restarted the trip and selected HWY 7 & 70 as my first point. That way I'd have been certain that's where I was going.

How

sussamb: How do you make "shaping points" in Trip Planner on the unit?

I use Trip Planner also, not BaseCamp, and all it shows are starting point, next, then destination (final stop).

I don't see how you can make a round trip with 2 destinations. I think he either needs to do as you suggest and hit home from 100 miles away and that restarts the route, otherwise he needs to make 2 routes.

And of course due to routing algorithms the route home may not be exactly the same as the route to 100 miles away.

On the other hand, he may be able to use reverse route if he just wants to go 100 miles away and back home.

Well ...

Tap the relevant flag icon in trip planner, and you can change it to a shaping point and vice versa. You're right that you can't make a round trip with just a start and finish point, but the OP has four points in-between wink

I Just

I just created a round trip on my 61 last week by simply doing "Where To 's" for each point in the trip and adding each location as the "last stop". The result was a round trip with all but the beginning and final destination (my home) being shown as Shaping Points.

The trip looked like this:

Home
Street Address
Hotel
Airport
Street Address
Home

I did input each location in the order that they would be visited but I suspect I could have inputted all of them, in any order, and had the GPS optimized the route.

This is really the site for all GPS related. I'm constantly learning new information.

Thanks

Good tip, I did not know that, and it will come in handy.

Did not

Did not know about the flag. Learning all the time.
I converted all but the 2 HOMES into shaping points and now my custom route is not the way I want to travel.
The 39 BEACH ST (my ultimate destination 100 mile away) is now missing.

What have I done wrong here?

Also what did poster t923347 mean by "each location as the last stop"

Thanks

When

When you create a trip using "Where To" to select points you start by selecting the first place you want to "go to/pass". Then when you select the second place for your trip, again using the Where To command, the GPS will ask you, once the place is selected, whether you want to - Start a New Trip or add this new point to the current trip. One of the options is to add the new point as the last stop in your Trip. Doing this for each point will result in a "round trip" if you use the same place as your Trips starting location and the final location.

I am confused.
Is the "Where To" the Magnifying Glass on the home screen? then what is next?

I use TRIP PLANNER and NEW TRIP. Is your way different?

Yes

Yes, it's the magnifying glass on the home screen. If you select a destination using Where To the GPS will calculate the route to that destination.

At this point the GPS will actually create a Trip, which you can see by going to Apps > Trip Planner. The Trip will be called My Active Route.

Then if you select another destination, again using Where To, the gps will ask you if you want to :

- start a new route
- add as next stop
- add as last stop
- add tp active route

Once you pick the option you want, the second destination will be added to the My Active Route Trip, and so on for each new destination you add.

In Trip Planner, you can tap on My Active Route, at any time and give the Trip a more formal name (i.e. My Trip to Grandmas House) my selecting Save.

So basically you now have 2 ways to create a Trip (and there maybe more) either my using Where TO? or my using Trip Planner. All I was attempting to point out originally was that by using Where To? to create a Trip, I was able to easily create a round trip route from Home to Home, where all points in the Trip (other than the start and end points) were shown as Shaping points by default.
