"Idea scrapped" Nexus 7 (2012) Set up for use in dash

Thanks so much,

My son is trying to set up an old Nexus 7 (2012) that is old technology so he can use in the dash of his truck.
He tried yesterday and could not get it to accept wifi direct from his wife's Note 3. Not sure what he meant by wifi direct or why he was trying to do that.

Has anyone ever worked with a Nexus 7 (2012) to do anything like installing it in a dash. Are there any ideas for him in what to try.
The big question, is it too old technology?

I told him I knew a group of people that if it can be done they will be the ones who know how.

Thanks Mary

The Note 3 has a WIDI

The Note 3 has a WIFI hotspot. Apparently the Nexus is not connected to a cell service and he's trying to connect through the Note.

He's going to have to figure out the Hotspot problem before he's going to be able to use the Nexus.

He was trying to to see why it wouldn't connect but had no idea. He assumed the Nexus 7 was too old technology but didn't know what to check.

Is the Nexus seeing the Note 3

He has to look and see if the Nexus sees the Note 3. I don't know how the Nexus works but I suspect it is similar to others.
He should be able to scan for open networks and the Note should be one available. Of course the Note must also be set up as a hot spot.

Can you tell us exactly what he has done to connect Nexus 7 to Note 3 hotspot? On the Nexus 7 phone, did he see the (Note 3) WiFi hotspot to connect to? Did he type Note 3 access point password correctly when prompted? Does his wife's Note 3 have hotspot plan? Can other WiFi devices connect to the Note 3 to access the internet? Which Android version is the Nexus 7 running?

I suspect that Nexus 7 is not capable of connecting to WiFi with WPA2 encryption enabled. For troubleshooting purpose, ask him to turn off WPA2 encryption on the Note 3 hotspot setting, just to see if it connects without encryption. He won't need a password to connect.

I will send him this thread

I am not sure just what he is doing. He went home so I will send him this thread so he can read all the suggestions and let me know how to respond.
Thanks, Mary

I do know they have a hotspot plan and they use it.
