Route Limitations

I have discovered by Trial and Error that when uploading a route, or creating a route, that you cannot have more that 29 Vias.

Years ago I created some routes for my trip on Rte66 in Delorme Street Atlas. I had to use a lot of bias to stay on the true route. I have converted these Delorme files to GPX XML and loaded one state file and waypoints to my 3597.

It took it, after a fashion, but popped up the error message that the route contained more than 29 vias and broke it down to 22 individual routes, then promptly froze up.

After resetting, the routes are there, but breaking a 97 mile trip into 22 routes is sort of cumbersome. I don't know how useful the routes will be, nor am I sure that I could get all 8 state routes on the Unit.

I just thought that I would throw this out there, especially in light of the member attempting to create a RTE 66 route for his unit.

YMMV

Well ...

I'm unclear why a route of only 97 miles would need more than 29 vias. In any case note you can have 125 shaping points between vias.

I create a route from a start and end point, adding vias and shaping points as needed. Even with routes of a couple of hundred miles 29 points has been more than ample.

Route 66. The old road. It

Route 66. The old road. It has been broken up by being replaced by Interstate, frontage roads. Some sections that are no longer connected and you have to route on and off. Things that you can't force. the GPS to do with vias or shaping points. The routes that I have converted from Delorme files to GPX and loaded on Basecamp, Won't upload as it, with out the unit reacting.

Zooming in on the route in Basecamp, I see that the GPX file has created a gazzilion waypoints. If you like, I can send you one of the GPX files and you can zoom in and look at it and see if you see a way to reduce the waypoints with out the route engine taking off in directions you don't want it to go.

this is really and exercise in creating a route that uses specific roads, instead of merely generating a route that goes from Point A to Z.

Well, been playing around

Well, been playing around with BaseCamp. Probably if I were a Power User, I might have found it sooner.

If you right click the GPX route on the map, you can choose "Create a Track". Then highlight the Track in the left window, and on the map right click the Track and choose "Create a Route". Then you can upload that Route, (without the waypoint) and get a reasonable route on the unit.

I still don't know if the GPS won't take off on it's own idea of the route when running it. I haven't had the time to simulate it and find out.

Take off on its own

My experience with the nuvi 3597 is that routes without via points or shaping points will always be recalculated by the GPS. This is from actual use, not simulation.

For routes with via or shaping points the route will stay the same, but if you go off the route for some reason like stopping for lunch, the route will be recalculated hopefully only to the next via or shaping point.

Yep

If you go off route your GPS will act as it's designed to, and get you back on route. That won't always be the way you want to go wink

Dobs and Sussamb, yes I'm

Dobs and Sussamb, yes I'm aware of that, and it's frustrating. Usually, if I get off route, I just stop the route and restart it.

I think I've got the problem solved.

Guess it's resolved?

I have replied to your email though, glad you've now got a way forward smile
