Subway File-Volunteers

This file was transferred to me a few days ago. Looking at it's history, it has not been updated in almost 7 years.
The present file has 22,215 locations and looking at the website locator, it indicates that there are 24,834 locations in the US.

Since the locator only lists 50 locations at a time, this is going to be a very time consuming process.
I don't like to make a request like this, but I hope that some of the members/maintainers will volunteer to update portions of the file.
At this time, with the exception of AK and AL, all states are available.

Looking at the present file, phone numbers are not included. Therefore the update should include these.
I have already updated Alaska and Alabama and these now include each phone number. I also decided to include the restaurant # since it is located right below the phone numbers.
Relatively ease (ha-ha) to obtain both with copy and paste.
I would really appreciate some help on this file.

Thanks in advance.

A daunting project

I do not envy you your task Mahoney.

I have a similar POI in mind which I want to start from scratch and it has "only" 300 locations.
Tried to contact their head office by email and got no response. I'll have to try again when I get home, this time I'll try in person.

IMHO, I love/hate

IMHO, I love/hate information. Adding info like the company restaurant NUMBER may be helpful, but I don't see it. It is definitely a hindrance, especially if it is placed in a location that preempts more usable info. I think most GPS units display one line of info. IMHO, the most important is the street name. The process is to lookup SUBWAY, then either find the one that is closest if you are not a local, or the one on a particular street if you are a local. If that info isn't first, then one must scroll to find that. Not very expedient. Phone numbers may be more useful than restaurant numbers but how many times are ppl going to look for them.
The previous structure of the file Was good. I think an improvement might be to place the building number AFTER the street name. Most of the time the numbers are impossible to find and that is what the GPS does for you. After all you are not going to mail them a letter.
It may be easy to add, but is it at all useful except for company employees?
The current structure that you have will require me to edit every update I download to make it usable for me. Maybe I just POIload these files a lot different than everyone else, but Subway-Anchorage,AK (or Subway-whatever) will appear on my screen for every listing and will do me no good. I already know that I am looking at Subway listings. If I am in Anchorage, I already know I am there, now I must scroll my screen to find a street, which I probably won't do since I am not a local in Anchorage and I am just looking for the closest one which the GPS is already telling me. So in this case all the info is pretty much useless. The info is also too verbose. It is obvious that #15777 is a restaurant number so why put "restaurant" in there?
Subway-Anchorage,AK
4608 Spenard Rd [Lakeshore Ctr ste F], Anchorage,AK 99503|907-248-2687, Restaurant #15777

My preferred listing would look like this
Spenard Rd,4608,Anchorage,AK,99503-907-248-2687
or if the # is needed
Spenard Rd,4608,Anchorage,AK,99503-907-248-2687,#15777

The most usable info will appear on the GPS screen, maybe
Spenard Rd,4608,Anchor...

Why would anyone need to know this unless they were operating without a GPS and therefore not using this file? >>> [Lakeshore Ctr ste F]

FYI - I separate fast food restaurants into one folder and POILoad the whole folder. When I want to find Subway in my GPS I first select Fast Food, then Subway. Every listing I see is for Subway, which is why I don't need to see "SUBWAY". YMMV

My feelings mostly exactly

I mostly agree with you about what information to include. I still put street address first then street name, but that's just me. Lately I'm even omitting the zip code. Just can't figure out why I might need it.

Free Files

Merry Christmas to you too.

You must remember that the files are free..

...and that someone has put an awful lot of work into creating those files. I can't imagine the time that Mahoney (and, some of the other maintainers) puts into these things. My feeling is that if one does not like the format, they can do one of two things. Accept them as they are, or, create your own files. As the old saying goes, don't bite the hand that feeds you. With that being said; I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas.

@plunder thanks for your

@plunder thanks for your input. Hopefully, more people will have some reasonable input.

There is no question the these files are a PITA to organize, put together, and maintain. I have attempted to work on a small portion of NC, The Triangle - Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill -- a lot has changed for sure. I rethought my format and changed it to having the street number up front, because it is more difficult to verify/check/maintain without it. So I have gone back to this.

4830 Apex Highway 55,Park West Crossing,Durham,NC,919 544-6808,27713

Since some of these are in places like Walmart, or a hospital, that may appear instead of the shopping center name. I am still struggling with zip code and phone, but the phone may be important to verify hours or even if they are still there. The zip code is probably only good for package/mail delivery or maybe for maintenance sorting.

Zip Code

I agree that the zip code is not much help, however, If you have a file that has more than 50 locations in a city (example
Subway locations in Chicago,IL, which has more than 112 locations), Zip code is needed in obtaining all locations. Just putting Chicago in the website locator does not give all locations. For this situation, I have to put in various zip codes in the website locator to ensure that I have all locations. This is the problem in a number of Fast Food files that I try to keep updated.

Subway Georgia and Hawaii

I have completed the update of GA and HI.
