University study: Red light cameras don't reduce accidents

Here's yet another study, this time by Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, that shows that red light cameras don't make intersections safer. It's a short but interesting read.

Everyone who's surprised raise your hand.

Yes, it is a know fact.

Yes, it is a know fact. These red light cameras are cash grabs for the cities. Last year I was in Yuba City, California. There were no red light cameras anywhere in the town. I asked my cousin about it. He told me that city did introduced these cameras in the town but everyone became so aware there these cameras did not generate any money and city finally removed them.

sigh

even judging by the subsection of red light cameras on this forum, it's no longer an issue. People are used to them, and seem to be able to live their lives and avoid tickets. I can't imagine wasting time researching anything at all related to them, but that's what universities do, right?

Maybe the funding could have been used towards cancer, or something else important...

How is it a cashgrab ???

If you drive paying attention to several clues as to when the light will change ie. pedestrian light flashing etc. you should be able to stop in time. But where I live I see many that stomp the accelerator pedal to go through what becomes a red light.

Reason for RLC removal (the city's version):

The intersections are safe now. We do not need cameras any longer.

The city where I live used to have multiple intersections with RLC. They remained for a couple of years before they got removed. There is none today.

Back when there were RLCs, I had witnessed at least 4 incidents of cars running thru an RLC intersection (as the traffic light turned red) and the flashes going off but thankfully there were no accidents. I guess not many violators pay their RLC tickets.

Somebody made some big bucks

Grant money is easy income money, lol

Not surprized...

This is just another revenue generation scam that has always stunk to high heaven :/

Regardless

Those idiots who do run a red light and have to pay a fine will hopefully have learned not to repeat !!!!
It is my belief the only ones screaming bloody murder are the ones who do run red lights and get caught !
What difference does it make to anyone who obeys traffic lights and therefore does not get caught? NONE WHATSOEVER !!!

A private Company installs and maintains the cameras

Where there is profit to be made, there is the possibility of corruption. Not enough revenue, tweak the settings a touch, chances of private citizen finding and proving the mal adjustment, nil.
