Lost Traffic, DriveSmart50 keeps loosing iphone connection

I have a drivesmart 50 LMT, iPhone 6+.

My phone and Garmin mount on dash side by side, 6" apart. Both phone and garmin are up to date. Icon on top left corner of smartlink spp is not lit. Everytime I need traffic, I need to reconnect the app manually to phone and reenter the pin on screen. Then while driving, garmin occasionally pops up notice that phone is no longer connected. I cannot keep these 2 connected. Everything worked fine before May 1 when I did a map and firmware update to garmin and then did a roadtrip south to SC.

Power cable has that rectangular block in it. This cable came with my BC30. Garmin back up camera.

Again, everything worked great up to the new map and firmware up date I did May 1st for my trip.

Any ideas? I'd like to get my traffic back but I need to use this cable for the back up cam.

Well ...

Given you appear to have done a software update first thing to try is a master reset as that generally resolves issues after a software update.

I held the power button and rebooted it, connected it to garmin express and updated it, there was also a update for smartlink yesterday so I got that. I was driving today and it never lost it's connection to my iphone and it says it gets its traffic through smartlink in my iphone. Now I just need to drive in traffic to see what it does but just the fact it stays connected is promising

Thanks

V 2.9.2

I'm glad the update appears to have solved your problem.

I Just updated to V 2.9.2 today. The description claims it solved some BLE connection issues. I haven't tested it yet but I'm hopeful based on your experience.

Thanks for posting.

I've totally given up on Garmin's iPhone link for traffic....

On my DriveLux 51 and use a GMT 60 cable from an earlier Garmin which gives me fast and consistent HD traffic with my iPhone switched off and in my pocket. After talking with Garmin tech about the fact that their app has to be open at all times on my iPhone to get traffic reports, which are really no better than the ones I got off the GMT 60, I've simply deleted their iPhone app and never looked back.

Interesting

An interesting observation.

Things may be different for Android folks. At least for me, the Garmin Smartphone Link app needs to be installed but not open all the time to receive data from a cellular signal and Bluetooth it to the Garmin device.

Also, for folks in rural areas, the Smartphone Link app provides great traffic data as long as there's a cellular signal while in states like Arizona, only Greater Phoenix and Greater Tucson provide FM or HD traffic data for use by the Garmin device and traffic receiver meaning that a vast majority of the state's area has no Garmin traffic coverage.

For folks unfamiliar with the Garmin app, it uses very little of a cell phone's data so worrying about data usage is unnecessary.

Live Traffic

In the rural areas I travel, FM and HD traffic are all but useless. Live traffic via smartphone link is the only reliable source of traffic information.

In my case, the Smartphone Link app does not have to be active on my iPhone 7+ for it to function with my 3597 and RV760 gpsr's. The only time I have disconnect problems is when I have several Bluetooth devices operating at the same time.

Apparently, the issues vary with different Smartphone / GPS combinations.

2.9.2 Fixed what 2.9.1 broke

I Just updated to V 2.9.2 today and now the BLE connection issues i had with my Drive Assist 50 are fixed.

Last week after the previous 2.9.1 update, I completely lost traffic - both Smartphone Link AND the traffic receiver.

Reboot iPhone

I've found that my iPhone loses Bluetooth connection to my DriveSmart 70LMT periodically. An iPhone reboot seems to fix it usually. Sometimes I have to turn off and then turn back on the Bluetooth services on the Garmin too. Strange but yes I think the recent app update this week helped.

I've found some phones

I've found some phones periodically reset their connections as a means of battery management.

I am always having issues

I am always having issues with Bluetooth connectivity with Nuvicam using iphone 6 - 7.
BLE connectivity is a constant pain. It will work for 4-5 days and then all of a sudden it will drop. Some times I had to un-check Bluetooth option in settings and re-check to make it working and some times I had to do data reset on nuvicam and re-pair it to make it working.
Looks like new version 2.9.2(1516) has really messed it up. It was suppose to fix BLE issues but it made it even worse now. I am almost on the point where I have stopped using smartlink app.

I have no BT issues on my 3597 device.
