Nuvi 2699 - Reorder Categories

Just getting used to my 2699 and was wondering if there is a way to alphabetize the list that pops up when I go to: Where To / Categories?

There are 2 sections with the first showing Restaurants, etc., and the last section titled Search Tools. In this section Foursquare is first, and I don't use it at all. I would rather have Address, Cities, Coordinates.

Any thoughts?

No

Oops. Read that wrong.

That being said, I don't think you can change that.

When you click on Where To screern.Scroll down to the bottom and you will see add shortcut and touch it. You can then select a shortcut to add to the screen. Now once you have the shortcuts you want. Press your finger on a selected icon and drag it to the order you want it to show on the screen. Works this way on the Nuvi 2597. Should be the same or close to this method for your device.

Your reply helped as I

Your reply helped as I learned more, but my question was on one screen deeper, when I touch Categories on the right side.

As you said, I can add a shortcut, but it seems to be at the bottom.

I can press and hold then try to move it, but it doesn't move.

I did find that when I deleted a shortcut it is still available in the list that comes up when I touch Add Shortcut. This good as I can add it later if I change my mind.

Really surprised you can't drag in to a location. Not sure why they would removed that feature. I have my custom pois icon in the number one spot.

On my screen when you touch Where To. I see on right side Categories, saved and recent. The big screen on the left is where I place the icons in the order I want and find shortcut at the bottom.

Yes I agree.

Ok, I was talking about the

Ok, I was talking about the List view. I didn't really think of moving them to shortcuts.

I will say that I did make a POI shortcut a week ago and moved it to the 2nd spot. However tody I'm not able to move shortcuts. Maybe I'm not holding my finger just right. smile

However, charlesd45 last post did cause a light to come on. I guess I could make shortcuts for a few items in the List, then the List would be superfluous (or a backup). I never thought of that, just thought of them as separate entities. I'm just not used to all this 'power' compared to my 660.

Icons

Yes you have to hold your finger just right. I tested my unit to make sure I had the steps in the correct order before posting. The first try I was not able to drag the shortcut and that caused a little excitement on my part. The next try went OK.

Went through the same thing when I moved up from the Nuvi 265 to the 2597 and still finding things.

Ha ha, I've been sweeping, poking, stabbing, pressing, etc. all to no avail. So I was sitting here playing with our unit and telling my wife what I've done. While talking and demonstrating I found the solution.

When touching an icon I have to hold until the background goes returns to normal, then just move the icon. Works every time.

Problem solved, thanks all!

Congratulations. Patience

Congratulations. Patience paid off.Enjoy your GPS.

good find

Good find, asallway, on moving Shortcuts around. I also discovered how to delete shortcuts at least on my 2xx7 (Hit Where To, and then hit the little icon with horizontal bars at top left). That pops up a menu to selectively delete shortcuts.

What would be really nice is to add a shortcut for a certain category of Saved Favorites, I haven't been able to do that.

Semi-related: Does anyone know a way to delete an empty Favorites category name? I ended up with duplicate categories, combined all favorites into one and now I can't seem to delete the empty one.

On my 2597 when you touch Where To and the screen comes up with all the icons.Scroll down to add Add Shortcut and touch it. I get option to add Favorite search, category and saved place.

On empty favorite category once I remove all the pois from the category it no longer appears under the saved tab after boot up.

Oddly I have two empty category that will not disappear on reboot. Nothing in them.

For Shortcuts, mine has that option to add Category, but then only allows me to select from built-in categories: Restaurants, Shopping, etc.. Not Categories I created for Favorites.

Saved places

By chance do you have a saved place assigned to two categories?

Nothing saved in categories

charlesd45 wrote:

Yes but not in these two categories. Here's the really weird thing, I downloaded my Current.GPX file and searched the file for the names of those two categories and they don't exist in the current.gpx file. Unlike the names of all other categories I created which are in the file along side the Favorites stored within them (Column AP in Excel).

Manual

Most of the above is explained in the manual, trouble is we rarely read them these days smile

No other .gpx files in gpx folder

Nope, nothing else in the gpx folder except current.gpx and a folder named Archive. BTW, I just connected and it downloaded some software updates.

Tried replacing via Basecamp

Thanks Charlesd, I actually tried what that thread suggests today, after installing Basecamp. I Imported all Favorites into Basecamp, then deleted (using GPS menus) all Saved Favorites from the GPS. Reboot GPS and Saved icon said "Nothing to Display" - empty. Used Basecamp to Send all of my Favorites back to the Device (after some editing/housekeeping), which reinstalled them but I STILL had the extra legacy EMPTY category! In Basecamp, I see a column listing the Folders each favorite is in. The legacy one I want rid of is not listed in that column anywhere. I even tried deleting Routes out of my Trips App thinking they may have contained favorites with the legacy Folder... no luck. I won't be too concerned with it, I tried all that because my favorites needed some housekeeping anyways which is a lot easier in Basecamp.

Ok, I didn't try to read all

Ok, I didn't try to read all the comments over again. Just to check that I understand, you have two Empty Categories from the Screen Where To> Categories? Or are we discussing the Categories under Saved(Favorites)?

When you erased your Current.gpx, did you also erase Temp.gpx? When you looked back in the Saved, were the Garmin offices listed? And last of all, did you Empty the Trash on the Desktop before you unplugged the unit from the Computer?

re: phranc

This is under Saved (Favorites) Categories, yes I have 2 empty.

When I looked back in Saved, yes the Garmin offices were listed. I deleted those before putting all mine back with Basecamp.

Multiple attempts; One time I deleted Current and Temp.gpx but had trouble booting back up (it froze on Loading Maps). Should I try that again?

Stuff like the Garmin

Stuff like the Garmin officers and Categories for saved entries are in the Temp.gpx. Current and Temp gpx shouldn't have anything to do with boot, Try opening Temp.gpx in Text Editor and do a search for Category and see if any of the entries don't have a Type associated.

Deleting then Temp.gpx should have no affect on boot up, and the init only reads the Temp.gpx once, after boot to see if there is anything in there that is not in Current and writes to Current. That's how the Garmin Offices keep appearing.

Again, just to be sure, empty the Trash before disconnecting.

Strange

Having copied your current.gpx into BaseCamp, then emptied the GPX folder on your device (including the archive folder there and trash if on a mac)and then deleted all the favourites off your device via it's menu were those 2 empty categories still there? If so you'll need to master reset to remove them. If they weren't then they must be in the favourites you're sending back to your device from BaseCamp.

Out of interest what are the empty categories called?

I'll have to try these additional suggestions this evening. One of the empty categories I didn't create, one I did. The one I didn't create is "Coordinates and ?", the one I created which won't delete is the name of a previous employer, "Trickling Springs Creamery". I had moved them all to a new category named "TSC", which I have kept. I also exported my Favorites from Basecamp as a GXP, and the "Trickling Springs Creamery" phrase doesn't exist in that file. I drop this file in my GPX folder to import them back in it.

Well ...

Coordinates and ?? is auto generated when you create a waypoint by tapping on the map or by doing a Where to, coordinates. Can you recall doing that?

Have you tried a search in Basecamp for the categories.

1.Open up the saved places(gpx) in Basecamp.
2.Go to top right and in the search tab put in the category and click search and see what comes for that category.

This a bit of a stretch,

This a bit of a stretch, but. I did some poking around in Current.gpx. Open Current.gpx in Text Editor. Do a search for category. There will be two for each Favorite entry. On each entry you will see something like this: Category>Map Points and Coordinates For every pair of "Category" there should be an entry like "Map Points..." or a name from your list of Categories in Favorites. Each entry begins with and ends with .

You'll need to make sure that each those entries are pertinent and complete. If you find some that aren't right, you can edit, or remove the whole entry.

You will also need to delete the Temp.gpx before disconnecting so you won't get false entries back in.

Also, although you probably know, in Basecamp in the list of favorites downoaded, if you right click on each entry, Get Info, (or Properties) on the last Tab, References is Categories, you can remove or add coma separated Categories.

This may not help, but maybe it will provide some insight as to where the Catagory names come from.

Search

I have tried everything suggested so far, including deleting all files from GPX folder of GPS then re-installing favorites by dropping a GPX file in the GPX folder which I exported from Basecamp. Prior to putting this file in, the GPS says under Saved favorites "No Data". I can open the GPX file in a text editor and the search term for the extra empty category doesn't exist in that file. So it has to be stored somewhere in the GPS itself. A full restore back to default might be the only fix but I don't want to go that far and extra category I can cope with so I don't lose my saved Avoidances and Settings etc. (they don't seem to transfer to Basecamp).

I connect my GPS to the PC and Search within all files of the GPX folder and the search term for my phantom Category doesn't exist within any of the files.

As for the "Coordinates and Addresses..." category, yes I selected points on the map to Save, I do it all the time. Then I later assign them to different categories (you can't assign a category when you initially save a location).

This really should have been a new Topic, I apologize for the rabbit trail off of this original post.

Saved Places

Sounds like you have tried just about everything short of a full restore back to factory settings. If by chance you do continue on in the background to troubleshoot the problem and find a fix. Please report back to the forum. This has been a interesting topic and a fix would make a good FAQ.
