Redlight Camera alert on Nuvi

I've got the red-light data loaded into my Garmin. It works perfect and alerts me to all the redlights which is great. What I'm trying to figure out is how do I get the information bar at the top to turn red and display the redlight information that's in the data file.

There are different screen shots on Garmin's web site that show this type of display but I'm not able to figure it out yet.

Right now all is does is put a "flag" on the map, ding once and that's it. I've got to actually "touch" a button to display the information.

Very confusing..... so if anyone can help I would appreciate it very much.

Take a look at the screen shot from garmin. It's the "more images" tab and it's the second from the last. Has "school zone" on the top in red. The Red Bar on top is what I'm trying to replicate.

What model nuvi do you have? Earlier nuvis like the 3xx & 7x0 series showed the redlight info at the top of the screen in a red banner. Highly visible and useful...

Later nuvis beginning with (at least) the 7x5 series changed it to a much smaller on-screen popup, and not in red either. Why was it changed? Only Garmin knows...

Looking just now at the screenshot you mentioned, it appears as if Garmin has changed it back once again to alert at the top banner in red. Thus is Garmin's yo-yo feature set. rolleyes

Regardless of the display method, you cannot change this behavior as the nuvi allows only minimal user tweaking. The feature is embedded within the unit's firmware and is not configurable.

Model Nuvi 2557

I've got the new Nuvi 2557. I do remember my old one with the bar at the top being red. I like that feature and wish this new one would do the same.

I can't even get the "school zone" to come up in red.

So....very confused as to how to get this to work, if at all possible

Garmin has decided that we

Garmin has decided that we are not smart enough to know what we want or need to customize this feature.

I missed that feature in my old Nuvi 360

sad

With my 2797, I couldnt get the school zone alert to display, until I loaded the POI Factory's Red Light Cam app. Still wouldnt come up with local schools but then came up at a school 15 mi away - as a red bar with tone, as advertised but hasnt come up anywhere else, so far. Trying to find out where the Schools data file comes from.

Alerts on 1450

All alerts on my 1450 are shown as popup on grey background.

Nuvi 2557

Has any one loaded red cam alerts file via POI Loader on Nuvi 2557? Is it working?

Very Interesting..

Seeing I don't have RLC's on my Nuvi, I'm not sure how my 1300WT would look.

Red banner alerts

The Garmin Cyclops UK Speed Cameras alert me with a Red Banner on my Nuvi 2598, whereas the same camera entered from a 3rd party POI site "Pocket GPS World" only gets a Grey Banner. The Garmin POI file is locked so I can't see how the camera details are entered to trigger a different stile of warning.

Any clues anybody?

Red Banner Alerts

After 3 years has anyone been able to figure this out?

I use POI Loader to save my alerts as a .gpi file to my Garmin DriveSmart 50. But for some reason the banner (bar) at the top of the map screen will not display those very important alerts with a RED background. Even if my input file has the keyword "Redlight" in it, the banner has a light GREY background which fails to get your attention.

But yet... if I save a Cyclops .gpi file to my DriveSmart 50LMTHD and use that instead... the banner at the top of the map properly displays those alerts using a RED background. Hmm.

After a bit of research I am convinced there is something in the Cyclops .gpi file that tells Garmin devices to display alerts with a red background. I just don't have the skills to dig into the file and figure it out. sad If I knew what it was that makes the magic hapen, then I'd be very interested in seeing how to incorporate that into my own .gpi file to see if it fixes the problem.

Alert features.

I think you are correct that there are alert features on Garmin devices that you can't set using POI Loader. If memory serves me correctly, back in the "old days" (circa 2009), Garmin sold a software developers kit that had advanced capabilities for generating POI files. There were companies that used this to develop Travel Guides that would take you on a tourist route and give you photos and narration about the places of interest along the route.

I don't know for sure, but my guess is that the Cyclops product uses some of these advanced features that are enabled through the developers kit, but not by POI Loader.

The software developers kit was quite expensive as I recall ($500 or $600) and I suspect you had to pay Garmin royalties if you sold files created with it. So in general it was not of much interest to the ordinary consumer.
