Android Auto

I just got a new 2018 car that did not come with nav. did not really need it since I have a Garmin that I can upgrade with free maps.

My new car can use Android Auto and have been playing with it. It is just like I have a Nav system built in the screen. Works good for the most part. But you cant use the other features of the screen when the Android Auto app is running.

@bobkz

Android Auto works with Google maps. Just wished it allow Here Maps App to display on the screen. So you could use the off line map feature.

Here are a list of Apps listed to work with Android Auto

I download Google Maps onto my android phone (Menu > Offline Maps)so I can use them off line. Couldn't you do that when using Android Auto?

Google makes it a bit of PITA to download maps as you have to do it in fairly small sections often smaller than the state by state or even whole country selections you can make with HERE.

Google maps works the same

Google maps works the same way on Android Auto as far as I know.Still playing with it like bobkz. Just more convenient on Here Maps.

Android Auto

Just today I picked up my new (2017) Kia Optima. The head unit has the Kia infotainment system called EVO which connects to your smart phone. EVO also integrates with Google's Android Auto.

I was surprised that my cheapo Tracfone actually works well with this. It all looks pretty impressive, but I suspect for now I will stick with my nuvi 3597 for most navigation. For one thing, I want to keep my POI Factory camera alerts. And since Tracfone is a "pay as you go" plan, I suspect it will be costly with Tracfone's data usage to use Android Auto for navigation.

My initial tests appear that I can pair both EVO/Android Auto and Garmin Smartphone Link for traffic on the nuvi at the same time. I am not sure what will happen with this setup though when I get a phone call or text. I wish I could turn off the telephony functions on Smartphone Link and just use the Traffic.

For an old fart like me who is just barely smart-phone literate, the learning curve for the Kia Evo/Android Auto apps will be pretty steep. But I am keeping an open mind at this point and look forward to playing and learning.

phone call or text will work

A phone call or text will work.

My guess is that bluetooth pairing may be a problem.

Android Auto

The bluetooth pairing with Garmin seems to work OK even when Android Auto is enabled. It is probably because the Kia UVO app connects to the phone with USB and Android Auto is launched through Kia UVO. I know Android Auto can connect via Blue Tooth, but I am not sure that it does in the Kia UVO environment. I am still trying to figure out how all of this works. The car salesman set it up, and he flipped through the menus so fast I couldn't tell what he did.

Note ... just realized I called it Kia EVO in the previous post ... it is actually called Kia UVO ... not sure whatthat stands for.

Kia debuted Microsoft-powered UVO, short for Your Voice, in 2010.

I have been playing with it on a 2017 Ford Explorer I purchased . It uses the Sync R setup. It allows you to download the apps on your phone to the system but they have to be Ford approved apps which makes it limited. Android Auto does give more options and so far I like it but would like the option of Here Maps off line to appear on the cars display screen for short distance trips. Not going to retire my Nuvi for long distance trips.

The salesman I had was very patient on running me through all the things the system can do. Not that I maintained every thing he showed me. I went on the Ford site and found videos on a lot of the questions I had. You may want to check Kia site for how to

bluetooth connections

Usually connecting via Bluetooth works fine. Problems arise when connection has to be kept alive for longer period of time. Then often you can experience lost connections.

As for compatibility I successfully connected Nuvi 770 with Samsung Galaxy S4. Nuvi was able to read phone book and make calls via phone. Somehow useless but still even so technologically distant devices can work together using Bluetooth.

Looks like a good reason to trade in my clunker for a new 2018 model.
