CCleaner problem

It was just revealed that the CCleaner problem had nothing to do with Malware but is/was directed at large IT firms.

See:

At the beginning of this week, it was reported that award-winning, hugely popular computer cleaning software CCleaner had been bundled with malware for almost a month with its official installer.
Shortly after, it was revealed that the incident wasn't caused by mismanagement at the Piriform, company behind the software, but a "sophisticated" hack that had managed to gain access to Piriform's development environment.

Now, Wired has more details of the incident. According to Telos, a security company who found the malware originally, the malware didn't care much about Joe Average's computer, but instead, filtered the infected computers and tried to find out whether it had gained access to specific tech firms' networks. Those networks include at least 18 large tech companies, including Intel, Samsung, Microsoft and Cisco (Telos, who found the malware, is a subsidiary of Cisco).

It's refreshing to see a company accepting responsibility for a problem and relating what they did to fix it. Good job, Avast.

Moving slowly can be a good thing

Moving slowly can be a good thing - at least in this case. I have used previously CCleaner, but for some time I have been too lazy to update the version on my computer. Due to blind luck I missed installing the corrupted version.

I wish that I could claim clean living as the reason, but the honest reason is inertia . . . smile

Looks like I too lucked out this time.
I have used CCleaner for years and love the free program.
I have version 4.17 and never updated from that version.
My motto is, if it works don't fix it. Many times I find updated newer version becomes bloated and confusing.
I'm sure many people will disagree with my thinking, failure to update programs may put you at a security risk.

However, I make a image backup of my C: drive weekly to revert back to those images should I need to restore the PC. I keep several of those images on a external drive.

Norton

It had been a while since I used CCleaner and I downloaded the infected update but Norton was already aware of the attack (I wasn't) and it deleted the file.

To update or not to update

So often when you have a problem, you are told to update everything. If the problem persists, you are told to restore to an old restore point.
I worked in a chemical plant and overheard a production manager tell an operator to go to a valve, and if it is open, close it, and if it is closed, open it. He just had to do something.

Saw that about CCleaner. I

Saw that about CCleaner. I have an ancient copy, never updated which turns out to be a good thing. If it ain't broke, don't fix it and my old one works fine. (on my work computer no less.)

.

I'm glad I haven't changed versions since last year.
