Drive Units add new Trip Data Options

I received a refurbed DriveLuxe50LMTHD yesterday and among other things that are different between it and my Nuvi 3597 is the addition of a couple of new Trip Data Options which some may find helpful.

As in previous models that support Trip Data display on the map screen, it is turned on via Settings > Map & Vehicle > Map Tools >Trip Data and is available on the map screen buy pressing the 3Bar icon in the lower right corner (older versions) or the "wrench" icon in that location on the Drive models. Displaying the Trip Data on the right hand side of the map screen allows for up to 3 display fields and a wide variety of displayable items.

The two new display items that I have found are called Location and GPS Accuracy. Location allows for a continually updated display of your current Co-ordinates and GPS Accuracy is the continually updated display of the accuracy your GPS is getting in Feet or Metres, depending on your units settings.

Here is how I have used these new settings although they could appear in any of the 3 available fields.

Interesting additions.

These are interesting additions, but I doubt that I would use my screen real estate to display those items.

Have you used the DriveLuxe on the road yet? I am curious to hear your thoughts about the driver alerts that were added. I read a forum post a while back where the user was complaining that the alerts were annoying and too frequent, but to me it seems like it would be a useful feature.

I'm not

I'm not sure why anyone would think the alerts were annoying and too frequent (except for the over speed limit alert). These alerts are listed in Settings > Map & Vehicle > Audible Driver Alerts and consist of the following items:

Speed Limit Reduction
Speed Limit Exceeded
Animal Crossing
Railroad Crossing
Schools
Curves
Slower Traffic

Now if you had them all selected then the constant beeping may well be annoying or frequent but the truth is they are all selectable and you can use as many, or as few of them as you wish. Currently I have all except the "speed limit exceeded" alerts selected.

In a trip I took this morning of just a few miles I heard the speed limit reduction alert, railroad crossing, Curves and Schools. None of them seemed to cause me any problems as they basically just gave a single beep and placed the Orange banner across the top of the map screen, explaining what the warning was for. The thing I liked about the warnings are that they are updated as you drive. For example the railroad crossing warning appeared about 500m from the crossing and then multiple times as I got nearer to the actual tracks, each time updating the distance to the crossing. I can't be 100% certain but I think there was only an audible beep when the warning first appeared and not as the distance decreased. The same was true for the curves alert.

Now the Speed Limit Exceeded alert maybe another story. I don't have it turned on as the last time I had a unit that gave an audible alert when you exceeded the speed limit it beeped at 1 km or 1 mile above the posted limit. If you drifted back and forth from right on the posted limit to just above the limit the beep warning would be going off constantly. If it still works like that on the Drive models then it would be annoying and to frequent. Since the speed limit display on the map screen turns red(orange) at 1 KM or 1 mile above the posted limit, I can only assume the beep goes off then as well.

I most often use my GPS with the sound muted so the warning beeps wouldn't really bother me in any event, but the updated distance sensitive alerts coming in the orange banner on the map screen is a terrific upgrade for the way I normally use my GPS.

Update>>>

Here is an example of the railroad crossing alert display and I can confirm that although the alert continued to update the distance to the actual crossing the alert beep only occurred once, when the warning banner first appeared:

Alerts.

Thanks Rick. That confirms (for me) that the alerts are useful. From what I know so far, the alert feature is the only thing on the DriveLuxe models that I wish was on my 3597. I don't really care about the FourSquare POI's or the WiFi (on the 51).

I enjoy reading your review & having your thoughts on this new series of Garmins & always intrigued/interested in seeing the various comparisons from one model/series to another smile

But ...

It's not all good news. The trip planner in the Drive series doesn't allow you to rename waypoints, viapoints etc in a trip, nor does it allow you to schedule trips by day. Trips therefore appear in random order, pretty much in line with when you created them.

Having said that I like my Drive smile

A bit late but I think I have stumbled on a way to place saved Trips into, what amounts to, alpha order.

I have 6 trips loaded on the DriveLuxe 50 and as we determined the only order we could come up with was that they looked to be in the order that they were put on the device. The 6 trips I have are:

X Home to Holiday First Night
Y Holiday First Night to Vacation House
Oct 19 D to E
Oct 17 B to C
Oct 16 A to B
Oct 18 C to D

These are not the real names I used but they represent how my list of Trips looked and this is exactly how I placed them on the DriveLuxe.

I then Decided to schedule a start time for each of my saved trips and I started with X Home to Holiday First Night and once I saved a Start Time to this trip the list of Trips changed to:

Y Holiday First Night to Vacation House
Oct 19 D to E
Oct 17 B to C
Oct 16 A to B
Oct 18 C to D
X Home to Holiday First Night

I then scheduled the same start time for Y Holiday First Night to Vacation House and the list changed to:

Oct 19 D to E
Oct 17 B to C
Oct 16 A to B
Oct 18 C to D
X Home to Holiday First Night
Y Holiday First Night to Vacation House

In those 2 cases with the same start time, they stayed in alpha order as they were originally but went in alpha order for the whole list with all the O's for Oct listed above them.

Now I tackled the Trips with dates at the beginning of the Trip Name. I first attempted to use the same start time for all 4 trips but that left the trips in the same order as they were already in. I then decided to place different start times on each of the Trips and this appeared to bring success. I put the start times as:

Oct 19 D to E - Start 7:03 am
Oct 17 B to C - Start 7:01 am
Oct 16 A to B - Start 7:00 am
Oct 18 C to D - Start 7:02 am

and this resulted in the list going into strict alpha order:

Oct 16 A to B
Oct 17 B to C
Oct 18 C to D
Oct 19 D to E
X Home to Holiday First Night
Y Holiday First Night to Vacation House

So it appears that you can put Trips in alpha order, at least, but it takes some manipulations of Trip names and Start Times to accomplish what should have happened correctly in the first place. rolleyes

So....

It didn't put them in start time order but in alpha order? That is just plain weird. Garmin needs to fix that so their is some kind of logic to it.

Well

Well I guess you could say they were put in start time order since they stayed in their original order when I made all the start times the same . They didn't go into alpha order until I made each one with a different start time BUT in this example the start times I used and the alpha order of the file names would force the same results.

I'll play with it some more to see if it's the Trip Name or the Start Time that determines the sort order. I wouldn't rule out the Start Time quite yet. wink

drivesmart 61lmt-s menu's

I find the new unit I have to be much much better then my Dezel or 2797 in menus. And fast as well. I'm glad to see Garmin has been making them so much better. I do wish we had more choices for the "Data" field you mention. But I love this high resolution unit with the Smartlink and wifi.

I tend

I tend to agree Captcaper. I bought the DriveLuxe 50 with the intention of having a quick look at it to see if it was worth spending my money on when compared to my Nuvi 3597. Since I love the 3597 I figured I'd give the DriveLuxe a week or so and then send it back. I don't think that's going to happen. grin

Although I'm giving up a few things like DEM display, 3D display and currently has a Trip Planner function that doesn't make a lot of sense (as discussed above) but I'm really impressed with all the new screens and options Like:

The "Turns" feature in Trip Data. This lists route turns on the right hand side of the map screen

The "Change Route" feature in Trip Data which lets you make route changes directly by tapping the map.

The ability to select Fastest Time or Shorter Distance routes when entering a destination (also on the 3597) and also to adjust/edit a route prior to picking the one to use.

Toll roads on your route being marked on the route selection screen.

Fatigue Warning

Much improved Audible Driver Alerts

ABILITY TO TURN AUTO ZOOM OFF USING USA AS YOUR LOCALE

The new screen graphics although simplistic are very easy to see and interpret.

I stumble across a new screen or option almost everyday, it's great.

I'm using SmartLink but the 50 doesn't have WiFi so I won't be able to comment on that.

As promised

As promised I took another look at my 6 Trips and this time I entered the Start Time as:

Oct 16 A to B - changed start time to 7:00am
Oct 17 B to C - changed start time to 8:00am
Oct 18 C to D - changed start time to 9:00am
Oct 19 D to E - changed start time to 6:00am
X Home to Holiday First Night - changed start time 6:15am
Y Holiday First Night to Vacation House - changed start time to 10:00am

The result was a Trip list of:

Oct 19 D to E - start time 6:00am
X Home to Holiday First Night - start time 6:15am
Oct 16 A to B - start time 7:00am
Oct 17 B to C - start time 8:00am
Oct 18 C to D - start time 9:00am
Y Holiday First Night to Vacation House - start time 10:00am

alandb, looks like they do get sorted by start time but to me THAT is just WEIRD as I don't take trips by start time. If I can't have Start Date order, I want alpha order. One I can possibly get by screwing with file names and start times and the other I can't get at all(Start Date order).

As you say, Garmin needs to fix this so their is some kind of logic to it.
