Map Error Correction Request Thread

I have noticed that there has not been a thread dedicated to correcting map errors. We have addressed a couple, but as a whole there are many people who are not able to correct the errors via MapCreator by HERE.
So I'm requesting that any street changes or corrections needed be requested here and we'll see if we can get them changed in MapCreator so they will be added in a future Garmin map. The sooner errors are reported, the sooner they will be on the Garmin map.

Please do not send any errors to Garmin, you will be wasting your time since they do not handle the map and any correction made this way can take years based upon the stories on this forum.

HERE's MapCreator can be found at
http://mapcreator.here.com

The latest published map by HERE can be found at
http://wego.here.com
If the error is corrected on the map at this link, then the error should be corrected within 1-2 Garmin map update cycles.

Not a

Not a bad idea to centralize the input of map corrections. smile

There is another interesting page on the HERE website that our members may find useful. This page lists all of the areas that HERE data collection vehicles are being deployed for the current and next month. You need to change the Select Region field to North America or scroll all the way to the bottom of the default schedule page, to see where in US and Canada this data collection is being done but it does give you some indication of where you will see data update changes in future map releases. The page is at:

Indeed A Good Idea But...

My neighbor and I have both submitted error reports on numerous occasions using this process with no result. GPS users have been cutting through his back yard for over 7 years now because his driveway is listed as a public road. Trucks invariably get stuck and when questioned, the drivers know nothing about map updates. Most have been using an older GPS that has never been updated and likely never will be.

We here at the Factory have an interest in GPS technology and tend to keep our equipment up to date. The average GPS user does not. Unfortunately, it will be many years before all GPSr's are either updated or replaced.

I agree that submitting errors to HERE is a good idea but I'm not optimistic that all will be addressed. Perhaps doing it as a group will have a positive result and is certainly a step in the right direction.

Where is it

Has this been fixed on the map?
Also, there's nothing we can do about users not updating their maps. We can only ensure the map is accurate as possible. Also, the errors are corrected directly on the map using MapCreator and not sent to someone else to correct.
I don't believe this is the process of correcting errors you and your neighbor have done multiple times.

high-tech solution

Seems like the high-tech solution would be a gate and a sign, "Private drive, No trespassing. Your GPS is wrong."

Here's Updating Method

Yesterday, I found a page at the Here Mapcreator site that listed the current areas that were being updated, but I could not find it today. If I remember correctly, it was the Ohio area. This indicated that Here does not do updates willy-nilly, but that they do one or more areas at a time.

If you go to:

http://mapchanges.navigation.com/?app=usa

you will see an animation of the changes in the last 18 months. Click the "View animation again" button in the panel to the left to start the update map from the beginning. The panel also shows the number and types of updates as the animation updates.

If you zoom in a little (East Coast is better - don't zoom in too far) and watch closely, you will see that there are certain areas that have a lot of updates shown and not others. These are mostly square shapes in high density population areas. I don't know how they determine which area to update next, but I assume that they select an area that has the most changes, or the most critical, first.

Anyway, it seems that changes that are out in the "Boonies" have a lower priority and don't show up as quickly. I imagine that interstate highways are high priority since there is more traffic on them.

I also found a page that said that over 2 million POIs have been added in the last 18(?) months. It's not hard to figure out why the map files are getting so big.

There is a lot of information on the "HERE" site, but they could certainly improve navigation on them. Explore the site, as there is a lot of info there that is interesting. They even sell map updates for in-dash GPS systems that are not Garmin. The update for my GMC was on sale for $20 off what the dealer charges.

Operating errors..

My beef with all the map updates is not so much the map update but with the operating system not interpreting the data correctly.

Each update seems to change which streets ahead show in the header bar. The map is correct, but the display shows the next road / exit skipping over several... or shows the next road ahead as the same one you are on.

All very frustrating when you are looking to exit at a specific road.. yes the map shows the road / exit but the header bar is "supposed" to show it.

So to whom does one complain too.. the map people.. not their problem.. Garmin.. they don't seem to care. sad

At least one

Is there at least one correction request? I see a lot of complaining about missing roads or areas, but not a whole lot of action. This is a chance to try to start fixing these areas.
