Just in time for the summer travel.

Installation completed ... it took 51 minutes including install to device and computer.

After moving the new files from the clone over to the real 3597, I am now down to about 215 MB of free space. I have already removed all the non-english voice, ASR, keyboard, text and help files. I do have about 35 MB I could delete out of the /GPX/Archive folder, but otherwise there is not much else to delete. This is probably still enough free space for the next map update, but it is starting to get tight. I will make sure I have a SD card in hand for the next map update ... just in case.

Bring on the road trips!

I'll wait a couple of weeks.

I'll wait a couple of weeks. Don't need the Nuvi to have possible problems this month.

Thanks Alandb

Once again for sharing the new file names & sizes with us which really helps and guides those of us who use your cloning method smile

Can anyone confirm if Map Updater still works with this new mapset ?

I tried it first, the map wasn't offered. I switched to GE and got it.

Speed

I really would like to know how downloads in 20 minutes, 26 minutes or even 1 hour 10 minutes are accomplished?

Pipeline direct to GARMIN ????

Or is another smokeable "pipe" involved.

The map will be provided on the Garmin Map Updater shortly

I think the map will be provided on the Garmin Map Updater shortly. If I recall correctly, there is a brief delay before the newly issued map becomes available on the Map Updater. I don't like using Garmin Express...

Well, if you have one of the high end devices like the nuvi 3597, where the full download is 6.91 GB, with a 100 Mbps (Mega BITS per second) Internet connection, you could do the download step in just under 10 minutes. I have such a connection with Mediacom, and realistically get about 80 Mbps under ideal conditions. In my case, the download step of 6.91 GB took about 20 minutes, probably because of delay caused by Garmin servers. However, the map creation, activation, and file copy (including installing the map to computer) took an additional 31 minutes. for a total of 51 minutes for the complete process.

Granted, my old laptop is no longer the fastest(although it was in its day), but still even if I had a new whiz-bang computer, I don't think the whole process could be completed in 20 minutes. Maybe for my old 755T where the download size is about half of the 3597.

2689LMT and Nuvi 660 (Via SD

2689LMT and Nuvi 660 (Via SD Card) both updated without an issue, but slower than last update.... Their servers must be hammered...

And Garmin fixed some, but not all of the local errors that existed in prior maps....
I posted a Nasty-Gram on that separately....

Downloaded

The 350 with the eastern US took slightly under one hour. The 3590 took about the same amount of time and the 3597 took about 30 minutes. No issues with using GE. Everything is working fine.

Updating

Now.
Thanks for the heads up.

Downloading

Well I see now what's going on. Some of you are only downloading a partial map i.e eastern, western or whatever.I download all maps.

Also I consider the whole time spent with the GPS connected as the download time, not just the map part.

And therein lies the crutch !

Also, choosing to install a map update to device and computer will take more time than the default updating of the device alone.

Downloaded today

Installed on my nuvi 3597. Went smoothly in about 90 minutes and no problems detected.

But if you want to be able to use the map with either MapSource or BaseCamp you need to do the computer and device route Craig.

Yes

Yes but it's also another reason why an update can take longer for some people than for others. Some of us do the device only update and some of us choose the update to device and computer option.

It's not yet available on Map Updater, but (like the last update) it should be available 2-3 days after the map came out on GE.

I'm cheap so I pay for the least expensive Internet access my cable company provides, it meets and exceeds my browsing needs but when it comes to downloading it is a dog, a map update in my PC hardwired to the cable modem takes 6 hours plus and forget about using the PC for any type of browsing while the download is in progress it just crawls.

My trick, I have an old laptop near the western wall of my house, my neighbor has his WiFi router near the eastern wall of his house, he pays for top of the line Internet access and in exchange for me minding his animals when he is away we barter to let me use his WiFi not only to download but to connect my big screen TV so we can get faster Netflix and YouTube connection in the Florida room.

For my regular tablet browsing around the house I use my slower than molasses WiFi

Last night I downloaded 2018.20 using his WiFi it took a little over one hour.

Ted - Garmin Nuvi 1450 LM

Alright...

I just ordered a Garmin Drive 60LM, it should be here today or Monday. I will download the new map set for it. I hope I like it, I am retiring my old Nuvi 765T.

--
Garmin Nuvi 765T, Garmin Drive 60LM

New Garmin

Yeah, I should retire my 1390T. It's getting pretty old and really slow and delayed key presses when inputting on the screen. Going to get the DriveSmart 51LMT-S whenever it shows up at Costco in Canada.

The jobs done !

Used once again Alandb cloning method on my 3597 & all went well smile

It took 27 minutes to download (I have an ISP connection of 30 MB/s & Garmin Express was showing a steady 4 MB/s from the beginning till the end). It then took 2 minutes to write onto my SD Card which was in a card reader & I would say another 25 minutes manually transfering the various files from the SD Card to the device. I have once again left my POI file along with the maps on the SD Card.

I then proceeded to update both my 255W with Garmin Updater but unfortunately 2018.20 wasn't being offered therefore I used Garmin Express & all went well.

The map didn't need to be downloaded a 2nd nor 3rd time & it took about a minute to write the maps onto the SD Card.

I then did a little clean up in the following locations & saved over 6GB on my precious Solid State Drive.

C:ProgramDataGARMINCoreServiceDownloads
C:ProgramDataGARMINCoreServiceDownloadsFirmware
C:ProgramDataGARMINCoreServiceDownloadsMap
C:ProgramDataGARMINCoreServiceDownloadsTemp

I'll most probably be testing the three units out sometime next week & will report back if anything out of the ordinary comes about.

Cheers smile

Cleanup after map update.

Thanks Canuk for again posting the folders to clean up after the map update. I seem to never be able to remember from one update to the next. I think this would be a good topic for a FAQ.

Because #1 his WiFi signal only covers the eastern portion of my house (I could get a repeater or booster) plus if I discontinue service there goes my e-mail address I have since the last century.

I rather keep this arrangement for special occasions like the dreaded Garmin update
