Basecamp Issues

Just returned from a trip to Lynchburg, VA and the waypoints I had plotted using Basecamp were totally inaccurate. Hotel said that they also get many complaints from customers regarding Garmin GPS relating to their hotel.

The same happened to other waypoints plotted to Myrtle Beach, SC on same trip.

Anyone know what is going on?

Address Mapping

It's hard to answer specifically without more detail about the waypoints you had trouble with.

But in general, searching by address can be fairly inaccurate at times due to how addresses are assigned coordinates on the maps. Office parks and shopping centers often have the address coordinates mapped to the street out front, not the actual building. This is a problem with the map itself, not the GPS trying to get there. Garmin does not make the maps, they are licensed from third parties. Any GPS or phone app using the same map will have the same issue if the address on the map is not correct.

The more rural the environment, the worse it gets. I have always had very good results with verifying addresses with Google Earth. BaseCamp has a built-in function to open GE and display the current waypoint selection(s) on the GE satellite view. I will often find discrepancies between the geocoded address on the map and the actual location of the building. It's easy to update the BaseCamp coordinates to the actual location if I see a significant discrepancy.

Without more detail on how

Without more detail on how you selected the waypoints it is virtually impossible to give you a relevant answer. Using the drag and drop method of placing waypoints on a map will most likely result in the actual location being no where near you expected it. Often when attempting to place a waypoiont on an Interstate results in the waypoint being in the wrong lane or not even on the roadway itself.

Waypoints

I think that there is one reason I like MapSource over BaseCamp.

My waypoints are accurate. I zoom in on a road or highway to see the lanes or locations I want to visit or use as waypoints.
If I hover the pointer over a street when zoomed in I can see the house numbers.

Still don't find BaseCamp as easy as MapSource to manipulate.

I beleive

I do not believe that this is a Garmin problem but the map GPS units use.
When I moved to AZ both my car and Garmin both said I was home when I actually was a block away. It still today tells me I am home but not depending of the time of day. I keep checking for the humor.
Both tell me that the bank I go to is 1 mile in the opposite direction from where it is.
There are many other places I wanted to visit that GPS was not coming close so I usually go to Google Earth before leaving so that I know where I am going.

Well ...

BaseCamp does all of that too smile

Your 1490 uses logical addressing. It'd be interesting to see what your results are if you compared your 1490 to a newer device with door-to-door addressing:

MapSource

That may be so, but as I said I do find MapSource easier to use.
It is harder to teach an old dog new tricks. smile

The only drawback using MS is to be able to send routes, waypoints to a newer Garmin you have to use BaseCamp.

My workaround for that is to save the file from MS to my desktop as a GPX file. From there I import it to BC and then transfer it to the GPS.

Well ...

... Easier than that. You can copy/paste MapSource data to BaseCamp and vice versa wink

I did not know that.
