Uninstalling a program

I've read in the past that when someone encounters problems uninstalling a program and it's componets the following Microsoft tool is highly recommended:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/17588/fix-problems-...

Personally I've always used Revo Uninstaller without a problem but wanted to know from others who have tried both what your thoughts and results were concerning using one versus the other.

It works

I've used this tool a couple of times and it worked.

The directions to place the tool on a Memory Stick could use some clarification though. A memory Stick is necessary if the PC that is corrupt has lost it's internet connection and downloading directly to the affected PC is not possible.

The only time the tool would not work was on my wife's laptop. Turns out that it had a bad hard drive. She opted for a new laptop. She is much happier with the new one as it is faster and has a higher resolution display.

Thanks for the pointer.

I also normally use Revo Uninstaller but just in case I have downloaded the Microsoft program and will keep it hidden away "just in case".

Interesting

I just tried to install this program on my computer just to have it there if I should ever need it. But, as it turns out, it doesn't install. It wants to uninstall the program of your choice that needs uninstalling. And not only does it offer UNINSTALL support it also offers INSTALL support, whatever that means.

I have used the MS Fixit

I have used the Microsoft Fixit Tool once. This was back in 2015, during the early days of Garmin Express where GE updates or installations failed and some (including me) found that it could not be uninstalled or updated or installed. The multistep Fixit tool worked for me and others here at The Factory when nothing else could, including the standard Windows Uninstall as well as Revo.

Here's a past discussion of this:

(Since the FixIt tool was mentioned by the "always on top of things" sussamb, I wasn't surprised when it worked exactly as it should!) wink

I could have used this Yesterday

A co-worker had an issue with Oracle 11g, probably due to corrupt registry key. The laptop had to be re-imaged, after which the program installed properly.

Thanks

Follow-up

Yesterday I saw that there was a new version of ITunes (12.6) & attempted to upgrade through ITunes itself as I've done many times in the past but got the following message:

"There is a problem with this Windows installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor"

I then went onto Apple website and downloaded ITunes but once again I got the exact same message/ error and couldn't for some reason or another upgrade to the new version.

I tried using CCleaner, repair program in the Control panel, reboot the computer etc but nothing worked. I looked for possible solutions on the internet & then fired up the free version of Revo Uninstaller and removed ITunes from the computer.

Tried reinstalling once again & was getting the same error message. I then looked at all the programs on my computer & noticed there were other Apple related programs still on the computer therefore I started uninstalling them.

I wasn't able to uninstall the Apple software update program using either Revo nor remove programs from the computer/ control panel itself. Tried and tried & it just wouldn't uninstall.

My last attempt was to use the Microsoft program & if that didn't work I planned on calling Apple support. The Microsoft program worked well on my first attempt & it showed a check mark at the end stating that it had successfully uninstalled the program.

I then tried to reinstall ITunes & boom the new version finally installed without a hitch smile

I'm still not sure what the problem was but I'm certainly impressed with this Windows program. I don't uninstall programs often but next time I do I'll definitely be using this Microsoft program from the very beginning as I've discovered it works extremely well.
