pulling hair..(SD card not recognized)

does Garmin nuvi require 8MB sd card or less, (as said in some post somewhere) or why is it not recognizing it. I still have time to return this thing.

There may be

There may be an upper limit but your problem could also be the card class. I would recommend a Class 6 or lower for the best compatibility and a capacity of 16 GB but it is highly doubtful you would ever use more than about 6 to 8 GB.

You could also have a formatting problem for the card and your GPS may be in MTS mode.

What makes you think it's not recognised?

And it helps to know which device you're talking about?

Edit: See from your profile you have a 57, is that the one?

SD Card not detected by Garmin Express
Description

Garmin Express has the ability to install City Navigator NT map updates to a microSD / SD card when inserted into a compatible device. If there is a problem with the SD card or the computer's USB configuration, Garmin Express may fail to detect the card.

Resolution

Ensure that Garmin Express is up to date
Confirm the GPS device supports this process. See Related Content for a list of supported devices
Verify the SD card is within size limits and has sufficient available space for the update
Ensure the card is inserted into the Garmin device and it is pushed in all the way. Some devices have a spring-loaded slot that will click softly when the card is fully inserted. Garmin Express will not detect SD cards inserted into a separate memory card reader
Take steps to ensure the computer's USB configuration is as simple as possible:
Do not use a USB hub or extension cable
Use the USB ports on the back of the computer if using a desktop computer
Unplug all USB devices except for the mouse and keyboard (including the Garmin device), reboot the computer, and try again
Try a different USB port on the computer
Format the microSD/SD card
Try using a different SD card
Run Garmin Express on a different computer

A functioning SD card should be detected if these troubleshooting steps are taken.

Have you connected your Garmin to your computer?

I don't recall seeing anything happen on my nüvi when I insert or remove the SD card. However, if I connect the Garmin to a PC or Mac, 2 icons will pop up on the desktop after a bit. One is for the device and the other is for the SD card.

Seeing SD card - on PC connection

am seeing the SD card when I connect the Garmin to a PC. So at least in the FILE viewer it is showing. Whether the Garmin makes use of it is unknown at this point

Well ...

The only time Garmin would "make use of it" is during a map update. If there are no files or folders shown on the card, it has not been used.

no indication

Neither the Garmin GPS nor Garmin Express will show any indication that the SD card is recognized and available for use.

Memory in the GPS could be 99% full and Garmin Express will not use the card. A future map update will finally cause the SD card to be used.

Contacts on the Card?

Word to the wise from a professional photojournalist who uses SD cards and Compact Flash cards by the dozens; try cleaning the card's contacts with a Q-tip and a bit of Denatured Alcohol.

Look it up. Lots of issues with card readers, Mac and PC slot readers, etc. No reason why a Garmin slot reader wouldn't possibly have the same issue.
