2017.30 Update Time

During the installation of map update 2017.30 on my Nuvi 2460LMT, I was required to install an SD card.

GE recognized the card and the update completed without problems.

The lasts update to 2017.20 required 63 minutes to complete the update, however this update to 2017.30 required 3 hours and 50 minutes.

Did the installation of the SD card require the extra time? Will the next update also require the extended time?

Well ...

... I reckon you had another issue. I've been downloading to a card for a while and generally it takes well under an hour.

SD Card

Garmin's write access to the SD card is notoriously slow. But as sussamb suggested, going from 63 minutes to almost 4 hours, something else must have been going on. Did you happen to notice if the bulk of the time was taken up by the download step? If so, you could have had a slower than usual Internet connection.

Sounds like your download speed was somehow effected

If it is taking this long again I would check you download speed when it takes 3+ hours again.

.

I always check my DL speed before doing a map update just to make sure there's no problems like this.

Garmin nuvi 350 Lifetime Map Updates NT 2018.10

They only get..

The maps only grow...they don't get any smaller.

Bloatware

Seems like this could become a bigger issue in time.

I've been using an SD card

I've been using an SD card for my 660 for many years, and I've found that once I put a copy of Garmin Directory on the SD card, that map updates (Using card only in the laptop, not USB Connected Garmin 660) are actually much faster using the SD card, as opposed to a USB Connected 660.... I'd say SD card is twice as fast as USB 1 speed 660.

Additional information:

The download speed, at the start of both GE map downloads, was (with slight variance) the same.

GE labeled the majority of the process as “copying files”.

Old garmins (like 660) are equipped with USB 1.1 port. This is slow by definition (up to 1.5 Mbit/s - comparing to practical speed for USB 2.0 - up to 280 Mbit/s). So installing map through laptop's card reader will always be way faster.

What class is your card?

What is the class number of the micro SD card you installed? It will be a number within a C like C2 C4 C6 C8 or C10 or a number within a U like U1 U2 U3.

My guess, Is you got a Class 2 or Class 4 card which are VERY slow. Get a Class 10 (A class 10 is 5 times faster than a Class 2). A U1 and C10 are the same Speed.

My SD Cards (due to limitation in video camera) are all Mode 6, 8 or 10 cards.... I see a little but very little difference in their speed in the 660 or during download in the laptop.
