If you are updating the map on a new GPS, charge it first.
Start with simple steps. Disconnect the GPS from the computer. Restart the computer and restart the GPS - not just sleep. Hold the power button for 5 seconds until a screen prompt appears to turn it off.
Before connecting the GPS, update Garmin Express by going to "settings" (gear icon) and "about." There is a link "check for updates."
Connect the GPS to a USB port on the computer itself, not a hub. Use the cable that came in the same box with the GPS. Then start Garmin Express. Click the + icon to add the GPS. USB drivers will be loaded and the GPS should be recognized.
For those who do not have Garmin Express yet, once the GPS is plugged in, install Garmin Express:
If Garmin Express has already been installed and it cannot see or update the GPS, then delete the GPS in the Garmin Express software. Unplug it from the computer and restart both the GPS and the computer. Plug the GPS in to the USB port using the Garmin USB cable that came with it. Garmin Express should then detect the GPS and install the proper USB drivers.
