Garmin 3490 - My Last Update?

So I finally got around to updating my 3490. I noticed (after a LONG time) a firmware update v.8.30 came out which supposedly handles larger maps? Not sure what they mean by that but I noticed that the space left over after updating the maps to 2017.30 was something like 13MB. If they come out with another update I'm assuming it may not fit. I know the unit can take a microSDHC card but I'm not sure how the unit will pick that storage to install to as opposed to the internal memory. I've been holding off on buying a newer unit as I'm still fairly happy with the 3490 and only really use it when traveling since I have a Pioneer head unit for GPS in my car.

I will be heading out to CES in a few weeks so of course I will be stopping again to see if there is anything new and improved. I liked the DriveLuxe that was on display but a) I prefer the 4.3 screen since it's has a sharper image and b) read too many bad reviews indicating over heating issues. If they were to come back out with a 4.3 and fix those issues, I'd retire the 3490.

Anyway, still wondering if I've hit the wall with map updates or if there is a way around the internal memory limit.

It's automatic

The first time your 3490 will not have sufficient internal storage for the full map update it's entitled to, you will given the SD card option which you will choose. You also will be given update options for a smaller map region which will fit internally which you will avoid.

Thanks!

Thanks for the info. Haven't been down that road yet.

Do you know the max size I can use for the card by chance? Being that this unit is almost 5 years old, I'm wondering if the limit is around 8GB vs. 32GB or 64GB which is more common today.

Internal memory limit

As CraigW states, adding a MicroSD Card is simple and Garmin Express will download the mapset automatically onto it if there isn't enough storage space on your device.

I have the North American mapset on an SD Card on both my 255WT units & on my 3597LMTHD and all three work perfectly smile

You can also do some internal house cleaning to free up some space which might help you in not being forced to use an SD Card.

You're unit can take a 32GB card but personally I use 16GB and have found that sufficient for my needs.

Agreed. Or you may have the option to NOT install the entire mapset. Exclude Canada or some other sections.

But I believe that you can definitely install maps onto the MicroSD Card.
