School zone alerts in Edmonton

I am on a search for POI's that deal with School zone alerts in Edmonton. They (alerts) have not yet entered the Garmin Data base and the city is very actively enforcing the zones with cameras. One ~$150.00 fine is too much.. going 44 km/ hr in a 30 zone!
I see POI's for red light cameras but nothing for school zones.. Anyone??

Nothing

I haven't seen anything yet. 30 kmph is a joke if you ask me. Millwoods, 39 Ave just east of 91st is the worse, I see them there every 2nd day both westbound or eastbound. Westbound, 2nd entrance behind the trees, eastbound behind the corner of the fence across from the school entrance, laser radar. It'll be a long time before school zones will be added. It took over 5 years just to get parts of the Currents of Windermere added onto the map.

We are still missing School

We are still missing School zone alerts in Toronto. Hamilton Ontario which is about 70 KM from Toronto has alerts for almost two years but nothing for Toronto yet.

I know Edmonton side is really bad for speeding tickets with speed cameras. I heard they give you ticket even if you are 5 KM above speed limit.

Buy a

RADAR detector then you don't have to worry. They are legal in Alberta !!!

speed cameras

I believe we have the permanent speed cameras. I'll check out the school zone info this week to see if they're using mobile cameras or permanent. If you see one and have a chance to send me a pic or info about it, that would be helpful too!

Thanks!

The Edmonton Police Service has an updated web site with the locations of all "automated enforcement" locations - including mobile photo school zone. It was updated September 2016 and can be accessed at:
https://www.edmonton.ca/transportation/Automated_Enforcement...

You might be able to develop alerts based on the geo locations. But, as the cameras are not "permanently" locate, I'm not sure how useful such alerts might be. I guess they would alert you to the school zone and the change in speed, whether or not there is a camera present. Which is a good thing.

School zone alerts

Edmonton has created an APP https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ismartways...

It works.. but one is overwhelmed with the other data / announcements. I have contacted the owner (?) and inquired as to the possibility of "them" making a POI file for just school zones in Edmonton as a public service. Not holding my breath.. but some of the work has obviously already been done and...

For what it is worth I see on my Garmin the latest update has now included some schools in Elerslie (sp) This is a newish subdivision just South of Edmonton.. so perhaps the next update will include Edmonton ??

Extracting data

I downloaded the App at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ismartways... and found the data base it uses called hotspots.db There are a ton of GPS coordinates / addresses etc available in that file.

I have yet to find a way to "easily" extract the GPS coordinates.. but working on it 65 out of 230 schools done for an initial test. At the moment I am only taking the school address coordinates as the basis of my POI file. And used only the default settings in creating the POI. Will see how it works this AM while driving about.

hotspots.db does have start and stop GPS locations as well.. perhaps I will play with those if my initial effort does not work.

I would be happy to share the hotspots.db file (not sure of the legalities of it though) and.. if, my POI file works properly will share that as well.. If / when I figure out how to share

Useless

Radar is useless for instant on laser radar.

Radar Detectors Don't Mean You Can Speed

A School Zone POI alerts you that you are approaching a reduced speed zone. The idea is to slow down to the appropriate speed before entering the zone.

If you have a radar detector and it doesn't go off when you enter a school zone, you should STILL slow down.

You Can't Fix REAL Stupid

I guess this guy didn't have a radar detector... or the intelligence to be given the privilege to drive a car.
