Florida Traffic Map (traffic counts, etc.)

I came across this neat little map while browsing FDOT's website. I had no idea that there were so many traffic counting devices installed.

What I suspected

My suspicious is that traffic gathering is not only coming from the cameras located at medium and heavy traffic intersections, I got the hunch that SunPass readers are being used to read or count traffic and not just who specifically is using the roads, next time you are driving around look up the light and phone poles for some grey or white 6X6" boxes strategically located half way up the poles, I have seen the suspicious boxes also on I4, I75 and Alligator Alley.

So what do you think, should I start using my tinfoil hat next time I go out?

Transponders

I always wondered about the EZ-Pass transponders & "alternate" uses besides tolling. In Virginia, we have many traffic cameras (not enforcement cameras) that can provide traffic count data, as well as give an overall picture of a traffic condition.

Reminds me of a story of a driver up on the beltway who received a huge EZ-Pass bill because an "oversensitive" set of transponder sensors picked up his signal from a toll express lane.
