When GE is running in the back ground, will it make my computer run slow?

express

Doesn't appear to have any effect on my two PCs, one a desktop running Win7 & a laptop running Win10.

It depends

How old is the computer?
How much ram does it have?
What is the processor speed?
Is it riddled with malware, spyware, and viruses?

To name a few.

Giving It A Shot

I'll try it to see if I can detect a slow down. I've never let it run in the background before.

Running in background

Anything I only use infrequently is not allowed to run in the background. Regardless how little one program may use the combined programs add up.

Anything running constantly in the background is using CPU and memory.

In Windows do the 3 finger salute to bring up the "Task manager", it will show you what BG programs use !

Well ...

While that's true the real question is whether they add up enough to make any difference that users can detect. Certainly I've detected no real difference having Express running in the background.

Same here ......

I use GE in the BG and see no noticeable difference in performance.

I find that too often, users tend to repeat what they see on the web. That, combined with the bad habit of downloading everything in sight, tend to slow down a PC. To make things worse, uninstallers are not created equal and "forget" things that end up accumulating .... sad

In My Case

On my Win7 64 desktop, Garmin Express spawns a background process called "GarminService.exe. It is among the top 10 memory users at 31,462K. There is little or no CUP usage however. On my machine, I have a fast processor and a lot of RAM so there is little impact. This of course will vary with each computer.

Even so, unless I'm doing a lot of GPS updating, I usually don't allow GE to run. I agree with Melaqueman and generally don't allow unnecessary programs to run in the background.

And remember...

Even if it is not cutting into your CPU, it is using the Memory that another application could use to run...

Just a reminder that at least with Windows 10 you don't need to do a "3 figured salute" to get to the Task Manager. Just right click on the an open space on the task bar along the bottom of the screen and pick Task Manager from the menu that will appear.

To really see what is going on with running programs, click on More Detail, at the bottom of the task manager screen (if it's not already open). That will let you see what each running program is taking up in memory etc. but also if you click on the Startup tab you can see and adjust what programs are starting with Windows boots up. A great place to speed up your boot time.

Also check the Services tab, which is a great place (if you know what your doing) to start, stop and disable unneeded services.

I checked with my wife (she is the computer guru in the family) She said that her lap top was running slow too. Must be AT&T service causing that.

Same on Win 7

Task Manager comes up the same way with Win 7.

Haven't seen that... but I have found something that slows down my wife's laptop.....
wuauserv Windows Update service takes up a lot of CPU horsepower slowing down (and heating up CPU temps) lately...

That's a feature in all Widows.

Exactly, it differs on every system.

Didn't know that about WIDOWS either. The things you find out on this forum, LOL !

Unnecessary programs

I also make sure that programs not needed aren't running in the background. To do this I look & set accordingly:

- My system configuration utility - Startup
- In services (Local)
- & finally in Task Manager

All of the above has worked well for me in the past grin

I disabled GE in Background

not for performance issues, but because it will install GE updates (not GPSr Updates) automatically without my consent.
I don't want a GE update until it has been tried and tested and has been shown to be bug free.

Depends

rthibodaux wrote:

A lot depends on your individual PC, its processor and amount of RAM.

While I don't notice it slowing down my i7 laptop with 8GB RAM, it is sucking up some memory so I disabled it so it doesn't run at startup.

I've never

noticed that Garmin harmed anything, just that years ago updates failed....

It is remarkable how when you start with a new pc (these days it's probably safe to say laptop), it's blazing fast, and as you add apps, it gets busy.

My 5th gen core i7 with SSD and win 7 pro 64 is no exception. Out of the box, Windows came up almost as if it were a tablet.

Honestly, I would never want to be a Windows expert, just not interested, the less time I can spend on it the better (in-laws always wanted me to troubleshoot their pcs and cars, but this has gone down over the years as they have gone to android tablets and have gotten better cars). So I tend to put weight on what the "experts" say, i.e. those who make mid 6 figures working on windows. I was told to not upgrade to Win 10 for free, so thank goodness I did not. That is not to say that if a new machine comes with 64 bit 10 out of the box, I would not want it. It's just the upgrade that has proven to not work well. Just like when you want to restore or uninstall programs--it never happens cleanly, and we all know that.
