Where to find Firmware Update Info?

Does Garmin or anyone publish a list of firmware changes?

It has been a couple of months since I last checked for updates for a Nuvi 2699 and it showed a firmware version of 8.3. After checking earlier today using Garmin Express, the most current version is 8.5. I was able to apply the update using Garmin Express without issue.

Now I would like to find out what changes were made since version 8.3. Does anyone know if such information is available?

Thanks.

For all Garmin devices

It'll take some searching through the link below since they're organized by date rather than series (and because you can't search for 2699, for instance, but need to search for 26x9), but I found this site to offer links to all Garmin updates: firmware, voices, etc., etc. Here's the link for the nuvi series:

Sussamb and CraigW .....

Sussamb and CraigW ..... Thanks for the above links. I know I had seen those Garmin pages in the past but could not figure out how to get to them now.

The Garmin page that Sussamb linked to directly was exactly what I had in mind. The Gmaptool link from CraigW gets me to the same Garmin page and also a way to get to the update information on other models, which is great.

Is there any way to get to those Garmin update information pages starting with the Garmin home page or does Garmin leave out the links?

The page referenced by Sussamb has a hierarchy bar near the top which shows the Updates page to be under the "Automotive" page. I am able to get to the Automotive page from the Gamin home page by clicking on the "Explore" tab near the top of the home page. However, once on the Automotive page, I can not find a link back to the Updates page.

http://www.garmin.com/en-US/explore/ontheroad/

Maybe a link is there but I am just not seeing it.

Sussamb .... Did you navigate to the Updates page the same way as mentioned by CraigW using the Gmaptool link or do you do it another way?

Thanks.

I ...

... have a link on my desktop for all my Garmin devices. Originally found for my older nuvis and now if I need others I just Google search for something like

Updates & Downloads nuvi 2xx7 and 2xx8 software version

FAQ?

If someone is willing to put some work into it, a FAQ containing the release notes links for the various model series would be helpful.

It'd be pretty tough

Unless someone can find a way to easily find these on the Garmin site, it'd be a tough slog—and would at best be duplicating what the Polish site (mentioned in my earlier post) offers right now.

You are probably right Craig, although I won't remember how to find that other site except by searching for your post here in POI Factory :) I am also somewhat concerned that the FAQ might be hard to maintain, never knowing when Garmin is going to overhaul their web site and links.

I decided to see what the FAQ would look like. I have looked up the links only for the devices released in the past 5 years. I suspect if I continue this, finding the links for older devices will be more difficult and may not even be available for some models. Here is what I came up with so far. What do you think? Is it worth continuing the effort and turning it into a FAQ?

I think it is worth the effort to make it into a FAQ.

For temporizing, one can look at

Wow, that's amazing that you got this far so quickly.

As you say, some older devices aren't in your list, and even more important, as you also say, Garmin is known for changing or cancelling their links on a whim.

From my Polish link I did find that last firmware update for the nuvi 855 and nuvi 350 so it's possible that even ancient models still have a link to firmware updates:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4437

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=1675

To avoid the Garmin link cancellation/URLchange issue, rather than (or in addition to) posting the link to Garmin's site, one could copy the Change Log text, but that'd make the task of creating and maintaining the FAQ even tougher.

On the other hand, there's nothing that says a new FAQ here must have data for all Garmin devices before it's posted. Your work above could easily be a new FAQ right now with a link to a Factory thread where folks could post a request for a model not in the current FAQ or offering a link (or text) to the missing models' Change Logs. I'd hate to see your effort today lost to The Factory's FAQdom. There are definitely times when knowing the latest firmware update or its date offered would be of use to us here and avoids the need to go by date through the Polish site's lists.

Other thoughts, folks?

New FAQ.

Ok, I will go ahead and complete the list as best I can and get it submitted as a new FAQ. I'll let everyone know when it gets published.

Thanks to all for replying

Thanks to all for replying to my question.

I tried Sussambs's suggestion (before the creation of the FAQ) using a Google search and was able to find the history for the Nuvi 2699, Nuvi 760 and a Montana 680t

Search Terms:
"Updates & Downloads Garmin 26x9
"Updates & Downloads Garmin 760"
"Updates & Downloads Garmin Montana 680"

So, if the unit is not on the FAQ that Alandb was so kind to create, then try doing some variations of a Google search.
