Apple iPhone With Garmin StreetPilot Onboard App Vs. Garmin Nüvi 3597LMTHD

I currently have several Garmin GPS devices. The newest and most feature rich that I have is my Garmin Nüvi 3597LMTHD. I am pretty satisfied with its performance. I am considering getting another device for one of my vehicles and I am considering whether I should get another Garmin Nüvi 3597LMTHD or if I should get am Apple iPhone and install the Garmin StreetPilot Onboard App. I would likely get a RAM Mount and mount it on the windshield, air vent, or a CD mount.

What I am trying to determine is the plusses or minuses of each. Here is my short list so far:

Apple iPhone-

-More versatile. I could stream music through this to my automobile speakers.

-I could select Google Maps, Co Pilot, Tom Tom, or other maps as an alternative to Garmin.

-This would serve as a backup cell phone. I have Verizon on a Motorola Droid Turbo 2 currently. I would likely get some AT&T airtime for covearge when I am out of Verizon range.

Garmin Nüvi 3597LMTHD-

-Less expensive overall

-Since I already own one, the learning curve is a non-factor

Other factors that I am trying to determine are how well the traffic feature works on the Garmin StreetPilot Onboard App. I assume that it works just like dedicated GPS devices, but I also know what happens when I assume. With my 3597, I usually depend on the HD Radio traffic feature, unless I am out of coverage, and then I connect via Bluetooth to my smartphone and get traffic data that way.

Are map updates available at the same time for the StreetPilot Onboard App or are the available less frequently?

What about things like saving favorites and recent finds on the StreetPilot Onboard App? Do they pretty much behave just like the dedicated GPS devices?

I am somewhat interested in multi stop routing. It was a bigger issue for me when I was on the road all day, everyday for work. Now, it is pretty much a non-factor most of the time.

Here's my input

I own both a nuvi and street pilot onboard for my iPhone. I like street pilot a lot but there is a big drawback currently. It has been nearly a year since Garmin did any update at all! That means no software improvements and most importantly no map updates. Very frustrating for me because if garmin took more care of it street pilot would be my top choice.

Can't tell you about the StreetPilot app... Garmin's Navigon app I have on my iPhone was first purchased in 2011 and I'm still getting quarterly map updates for it, as well as app updates as released. You can manage bookmarks/favorites within the app.

A Couple of Points I can Add

I have both the 3597 and an iPhone 5S running Garmin Viago. I frequently use both on trips but rely mostly on the 3597 for navigation. IMO, the screen size on the 5S is too small to read and operate safely while driving. I do use it frequently as a passenger though. I realize Viago is all but obsolete but the issue would be the same regardless of the app used. As a result, I bought a second 3597 for my wife’s vehicle.

I also like the idea of streaming music from the smartphone to the vehicles sound system. Occasionally, the Garmin voice will not override the music as it should and I’ve missed a few turns as a result. More than likely, this is an issue with my smartphone / vehicle setup though and may not be a problem for others.

If you do elect to go the Smartphone route, I recommend getting a unit with a larger footprint such as the iPhone 6+ or its newer equivalent.

I personally prefer Garmin

I personally prefer Garmin devices over navigation on phones. Nuvi 3597 is one of the best best devices. Maps are always up to date. I use phones for navigation only in emergency when I don't have my Garmin with me.

Have both

Use 3597 for nav and use iPhone with Waze or Apple Maps or Google Maps.
